i have a 97 spec itr swap in my 95 civic.... the question i have is its burning alot of oil... when i downshift to a stop.. and take off it smokes alot and when im driving and let off the gas in any gear ( usually 3rd or 4th ) and hit it after a few seconds it shoots out some smoke...
i took it to the shop that put it in and the leakdown test was all less then 5% on all 4 cylinders and the compression test was 240 on all cylinders... and i cant figure out why its burning oil..
he said that maybe my pcv system is clogged and to take off the black box on the back of the motor and drain the oil out if it, but ive never had to do that before... does that sound logical to you guys?
someone told me that its the valve guides that they wear out because of the lift of the type r cams and the high rev's and then someone told me it was valve stem seals..
im just hoping its not rings or the oil ring... anyone have an idea of what it could be?
thanks for all the help

oh ya my bad i forgot i already did that... compression is 240 238 240 237 and leakdown is all less then 5% across all 4
I see this quite often in B-series motors. This type of high vacuum oil burning is caused by poor cylinder seal. Rings stuck, cylinder out of round etc...

that traditionally only burns oils when you first start up
i think you're going to have to either accept a bottom end rebuild, or just keep topping it up with oil

Those numbers are good. Kinda leaves me puzzled with the leakdown being on point it.
The fact it smokes after decel kinda makes me thing maybe you should look into freshening up the valve seals and what not. Not a very expensive job.

if i were u i would just have the head redone, its not that expensive and it gives u an excuse to throw in some better springs and retainers etc for later on down the road if u wanna run some bigger cams

expletive YES..... well.. i decided to go ahead and do the compression check on my own.. because you know.. when shops do swaps for you and theirs problems.. they tend to not tell you the truth.... from 1-4 235 239 208 233...
ya so cylinders 1 2 and 4 are okay... but wtf is up with cylinder 3.. i did the test on 3 about 4 times.. 206 210 208 208, 210 being the highest but came up with around 208 the most.... so now i guess i need rings and my head done.. wich i dont have money for either one at the moment...
does anybody know a good shop in so cal that can rebuild motors and rebuild cylinder heads? ill probably put 11.5:1 compression pistons in it... i was thinking of ctr's but i think thats too much for a daily driver...
oh well.. i gotta good deal on the motor.. i paid 3600 for it installed.. but now i have to pay almost 2gs to get it fixed...

I was having a similar problem with my 96 type r swap. I replaced my valve seals and the smoke is at a minimum now. I believe all that's left to do is replace the rings (ugh). But yeah, I'd check up on the head in general. Doesn't sound like a bottom end problem. Start w/ the valve seals. Good luck!

ya.. being that the valve stem seals is the cheapest thing to do at the moment.. i think im going to take a day and tackle that.. just alot of work having to pull the valvesprings and ****...
anybody know what valvespring compressor to use.. i have one that works with d-series heads.. but with the b series valves sitting soo much further down into the head i dont know if it will be able to fit down there and compress the springs okay...
in a week or 2 ill do the seals and see if the valves are getting loose inside of the guides as well when i have the top of the head apart...
thanks everyone for the positive replys.... just didnt want to already have to pull the motor apart.. half the reason why i went with a b instead of the d because i thought it was stronger.. but this poor motor was beat to ****, even before i got it so with me driving it cruising at 5g's everyday on the freeway going like 90mph to work 40 minute drives it prolly didnt like it..
meh maybe ill just put a b16 in it for now until i can take the motor apart and rebuild it the right way and have more power

Remove the exhaust mani to see which cylinder/s is using oil. To fully assess the problem the head and pistons from the bad cylinders will need to be removed. This can be done with the engine in the car.
