Default Misadventures of Martaigne Part VIII

So I finally get my Focuz high-flow cat from UPS, and I take it over to a muffler shop to have it put in. We get there, I hand it to the guy, and he wanders off for a second, then comes back looking at the cat kinda funny. He looks at me.

"So um, what did you expect out of this piece here?"

"Well, hopefully it will improve backpressure, cut the noise level, and help me pass emissions."

"Well man, this here won't help you pass emissions. It's just a resonator. It'll quiet your car a bit, but that's about all."

Son of a...

"Are you serious? That was marketed as a high-flow catalytic converter."

"Yep, it's just a cat replacement. Won't help you with emissions at all."

So after I let loose a few choice epithets, I have the guy install a cat from his shop with a wider diameter than stock, and I toss the Focuz "Cat" in the back of my car. I got a fair deal, $119 for parts and labor, though now I'm going to have to sell this damn thing off on eBay or something. I'm sure I can make a profit off of it, I've seen the same product go for $90+.

On a positive note, my car is much quieter, has more backpressure and noticable extra torque at lower rpms, and I can actually hear my intake roaring (more like yowling) at high rpms. We managed to get the car home, which was a feat in itself -- it was pouring down rain, and my fender lining is still missing, and I still don't have a bypass valve on my intake. I swore if I hydrolocked another engine I'd just throw in an H22.

Cliff notes: Up yours for being lazy. Read, bitch.

Backpressure=Evil.
The important thing is not backpressure but maintaining exhaust flow speed. That way the exhaust moves out of the cylinder and out of the exhaust with as little restristion, but not "stalling" in the exhaust pipe. Also, you should have purchased a PowerCore cat which is legal in 49 states instead.

I needed backpressure. My previous setup was a straight pipe. No backpressure = no torque at low rpms. Unfortunately, I needed it. I'm happy with what I got, though.

Today while I was at the junkyard for rear brake calipers (mine seized from the car sitting for a good 9 months) they kicked a bunch of messicans out of the yard... they brought a tool in and were trying to get parts off a project crx in the back of the lot.

hey Martaigne...call up the place you bought it from (since you never put it on your car) and tell them that it is false advertising for saying it was a cat when it wasn't...they'll take it back if you threaten them with legal stuff (and hell they might even pay for the shipping too)...good luck getting rid of it!

Well, THEY didn't misadvertise, Focuz did... and I was smart enough to follow a seller's link on eBay and buy the thing direct from their website for less than the bids were going for, plus I can ship stuff out for free... all I gotta do it sell it for as much as I paid + same amount of shipping and I can turn a profit.
