Default H23 Headgasaket change Qs

So i am on vacation, first of cousins clean Prelude hasnt been touched in 4 months, last he knew it overheated. He went to start up, no luck did some diagnostics and whala she turned over.

Ran her real hard filled up anti freeze and noticed alot of white smoke from the tail pipe. Oil wasnt brown doodoo looking but its was alot thinner mixed with water of some sort.

So everything started up nicely, around 7PM. Header comes off first, hoses, P/S, cruise control, driver side motor mount, valve cover, top timing belt cover, dizzy, coil, sensors, etc. So now intake mani is attempted 5 top nuts removed, 1 bottom on the corner cant seem to remove the three bottom middle ones. its a BIATCH!

So we decide on leaving intake mani on until removal of the head.

Piston Number 1 at Top Dead Center
Made some extra markings just to be sure, looked to take timing belt and from my understanding I didnt have to take the crank pully to loosen the tensioner, meaning to remove the bottom timing belt cover. Never done headgasket before but it seems simple enough, just torque specs are important, oem gasket, head milled.

Nothing to complicated.

So basically my tired self and my cousin lightly pried off the belt, wanted to take the head off tonight.

So cams out, headbolts out (used a 14mm 1/2" drive with a craftsman ratched and a 3ft steel pole to break em loose!!)

Head comes off

Intake mani removed, head going to be taken to machine shop tomorrow.

Qs)

1)Do i need to remove crank pulley?

2) Remove bottom cover?

3)How do I remove Tensioner?

4)Did I hurt my tensioner by removing the belt?

5)Did I hurt the belt by removing it?

I dont think I did because I pried it 1mm at a time nothing to extreme to snap/stretch the belt but you never know.

Any helps thanks guys.

you will need to remove the crank pulley and bottom cover so you can be sure to get the oil pump lined up with TDC and you cant get to the oil pump unless you remove the bottom cover....which requires removing the crank pulley.

You dont need to remove the tensioner unless you are wanting to replace it. You didnt hurt the tensioner unless you did something not ordinary upon removing the belt.

Crank pulley is always fun. Either a really strong impact, or get the special tool to hold it in place while someone else tried to get the nut off. After the bolt's out, just tap and wiggle and it'll come off. While you've got it apart, I would just replace the timing belt anyway. $40 and cheap insurance (unless you know it was done recently)

Not to sound like an ******* but I didn't ask how to take the crank pulley off. I know how to remove it. My question was do I really need to, to get to the Tensioner. I am pretty sure its going to be alot harder to put it back on without loosening the tensioner.

I meant not remove tensioner, just loosen it.

14mm wrench. The bolt sticks outside the cover.

you have to remove the crank pulley and lower timing cover to ensure the oil pump is at TDC.

Okay, let me ask you guys before I removed the head, I moved the crank till the cams pointed straight up and piston #1 was at the very top. Is this TDC??? If so then that means the oil pump is at TDC.

the cam gear arrows need to be pointing straight up. just because the piston is at the top of the bore does not mean it is at TDC.

save yourself alot of headache.

Awesome i did that ! Well basically we put a screw driver in piston number one and turned the motor until it was tip top, then we looked at the cam gears and the arrows were straight up and the 2 lines on edge of the cams gears lined up. We also did some marks on the timing belt to put it together.

Thanks but I am too broke to buy helms. I think I am about to buy chiltons manual for torque specs unless someone is trying to help me out. Look the head is off and at the machine shop. I doubt I will be able to put the belt back on without loosening the tensioner. Next thing is my pistons are black as hell, I got a Complete Gasket set for the head, I know I need to use bond on the corners of the valve cover where else do I need bond or will everything seal up without it. Also I would love torque specs for the headbolts, the cam caps also.

Pistons are black as hell, intake mani is black as hell. Why? Running rich? How can I clean the intake manifold ports and should I use seafoam when we get the head back on. Here are some pics. The head looks pretty nasty.

its 60 dollars. If you cant afford 60 dollars for a book that will tell you everything you need to know, step by step then you need to not modify your car.

i picked mine up used for 30 bucks.

Your head is disgusting btw. How often do you change your oil?

I'll give you some tech advice. Get a manual. You don't know how to do any of this **** and none of us feel like copying pages on this thread for you.

If you already don't know, not replacing the timing belt is a horrible idea. You should have the block decked as well.

You have to take the lower timing cover off to get the thing back together correctly, though you can guess if you like.
