Why didn't you just use a normal bend?

Especially for something like this which could've been done with a bend and ten minutes of welding instead of an hour.

that looks really good for pie cuts.
however, a pre bent pipe would have saved you two hours of work.

Pie cuts look kool, somtimes. But Lots of work and if not welded correctly will make the bend more prone to crack. But looks kool, kinda like Zebra action.

Looks good, but I gotta agree with the rest of the guys. I would of used a normal bend if you were able too.

Pie cuts can definitely serve a purpose, but they are truly time consuming.

Here's the one I did on my car.

Also, here is a link to a nice formula I developed for making precise pie cut bends.

haha, nope didnt get scared away, I have just been observing. The wastgate welds have been on there for about 8 months, no cracks yet.
As for the inside, I will admit that they have crusted over but they didnt berry. On each weld I wiould gring off the excess that showed through the back. I am going to try and back purge , I have just been too lazy to go and get the fittings.
I have been welding at my shop at home for just over a year. No tig welding experience, and have been using the pie cuts for a couple of reasons. 1 I find trying to but up bends to inaccurate. If you cut half way through the bend it tends to be a diiferent diameter and wont but up cleanly. 2 I use a horizontal bandsaw to cut with and bends dont like to fit in as easily. 3 I am taking advantage of the practice to become a better welder, and 4 i think that they look badass!

A horizontal or a chop saw is much easier.

Just set up the angle (must be the same angle cut for each piece otherwise the oval won't match)

cut
flip 180 degrees
cut
flip 180 degrees
cut
flip 180 degrees

..........until you have enough pieces.

I didn't read correctly that you said "U bends". In that case hell ya vertical bandsaws are waaaaayyyyy easier.

BUT, this thread ain't about U-bends.

I know it isn't. Using a U bend would have been a MUCH better use of time and materials than cutting that straight pipe nine times.
