We finally installed the Spoon tranny on my friend's B18C5 powered CRX.
Converted from cable to hydro, clutch works perfect.
After the install, we went for a quick easy spin around the block.
We get back and a few minutes later we noticed an oil leak under the car on the side of the tranny.
We jack it up, and notice it was coming somewhere from the tranny. we thought it had to be one of the axles seals. So we get a new one from Acura, replaced it, and went for a spin again.
We get bak, same story. Oil under the car on the side of the tranny.
This time we look at the tranny more carefully and we found oil coming out of the tranny right at the seam between the clutch housing and the gears housing.
There is Honda Bond all around the tranny except where it's leaking. It looks like
they didn't put enough Honda Bond on a 2" long area and oil is coming out of it.
WTF!!!!
What should we do?
this sucks big time!

That sucks you pay big money for a Spoon tranny, and it leaks. It's obvious like other people say that you're going to have to honda bond it yourself, but should you have to? You pay big money for something and it doesn't work properly, that's BS. I say you complain ,and try and get some cash back
Where did u but the trannt from? JDMHondaParts, IPS?????????Who is selling the Faulty items?

If you can clearly see where its leaking from, and the hole isnt that big where its leaking from, I say you just JB weld that **** together. Since its such a small hole, JB weld will easily seal it up, but when you plan on taking the tranny case apart, it also wont bond hard enough to ruin n e thing.
BTW, what is in the spoon tranny anyways?? what's so special about it?

Just reapply some Hondabond.
i dont mean using JB weld for the whole tranny.. just on the spot its leaking. I dont see how that will hurt anything.
what he's sayin is that it's leaking from where the tranny case splits in half. if he welded it, that would suck to take it apart. honda bond or james bond it
JB weld does not equal welding. wouldnot be a problem to use JB to shortcut the leak. however, pulling the tranny, splitting the case, and re-hondabonding is not a big deal.

when you pay big bucks for an item, you expect it to be top quality.
Anyways, we took the tranny off the car and separated the casings.
Clearly somebody was asleep or they ran out of Hondabond at Spoon headquarters.
The tranny had barely any Hondabond sealing it. The gap that was leaking was a good 3 inches long on the lower half, and the top was just as bad.
We did a little "cake decorating" hondabond bead and resealed it.
No more leaks.
I forgot to take pictures, first time we opened a tranny.

Oh well, I guess anything that's assembled by humans is prone to this sort of thing. No matter how good their stuff, no matter how good their people, this sort of thing will happen occasionally...
Isn't it Honda's fault? I didn't think Spoon changed tranny internals any more... I thought they just bought them and resold 'em. Hope my Spoon tranny is fine when I get it, I bought it to avoid having to open my current tranny and I hate putting that *#@%'in C-clip back on the case.
Nothing really, it is just opened, inspected and reassembled by Spoon as far as I know.
So, if they re-opened it, I would say it is Spoon's fault.

What is special about the Spoon tranny?
The only Spoon tranny I know of is the one for the S2K. If you look on the Japanese site the only things in the tranny is gears, clutch but normally never entire assembled setup. The S2K tranny usually meant sending in your core tranny and they send it back with everything in it blueprinted and balanced which is not cheap at all. All Spoon items in Japan go through 3 quality inspections before there ever sent out which is normal. If you didn't send your tranny to Japan I doubt it was assembled by SpoonSports of Japan because they normally only give avg. sounding price if you send a core to them. This is the same with ECU's and axles as well.
Looks like Japanese tranny with just spoon parts in it..but that me.
Most items from Spoon usually come with Spoon documents about entire item if it's big item like that. Heck even there strut bars do. There is usually spoon quality sticker on there somewhere or if it's in a box. But unless I get documentation anything can be Spoon item if you put it in right box or stickers. Spoon and Mugen copies are made in many Asian countries.

I'm no Spoon guru or anything but isn't a Spoon tranny just an OEM case with like '96 or '98 JDM Spec ITR gearing and FD??
Sounds like a lot of people want to know and nobody has actually answered this yet...
