Passport Engine Swap Problems
Hey Guys,
I recently had a customer bring in a 94 passport , 3.2L , no start condition . Upon initial inspection showed no codes stored . When key is turned to start position , there is ignition spark for the first engine revolution , then no spark . Ignition Module , reference and CKP operation tested and verified . And just for the hell of it , swapped out ignition module , CKP sensor and ECM with known good ones , with no change .
Then noticed the timming cover had a cam sensor on it , and I know only '96 models and up have crank and cam sensors . Also know that interchange listing for 94 passport is 93,94,95 model years .
Contacted customer and found out that someone had swapped out the engine for him with a 96 passport 3.2L long block . And was never able to get it started .
At that point it landed in my hands . I wish he disclosed this info when I asked under what conditions did the car die out .
Although everything bolts up , I'm sure there must be a reason why a 96 is not listed as interchangeable . I suspect that since the crankshaft for the 96 has a different part # than the 93 , 94 ,and 95 listings , which all the same part number , that the difference may lies in the sensor wheel on the crank . The 93 to 95 models uses a 2 pin crank sensor , and the 96 and up a 3 pin sensor .
Now the sensor thats in there now is the 2 pin , which is the same diameter and depth as the 3 pin on the 96 and up version .
Can anyone confirm that there is a difference in the sensor wheels configuration between the 94 and 96 model crankshafts ?
Appreciate any feedback .
Thanks Guys ,
