there is no vin # on 5 lug conversions. Vin # are only on the car's chassis and body parts like fenders, doors.. etc, but not suspension parts. One thing though, if it is stolen, its not traceable at all, (if you were scared that it might be confiscated by the police in the future) but if you really have to know in your mind that it is not stolen b4 buying it, there is really no way of telling at all, but just have to take the guy's words.

I just wonder how likely it is for a car to be in a wreck yet have all four wheels and most of the suspension components completely undamaged.
Sure, it is possible depending on the kind of accident, but it does set off my BS detector...

.. there are plenty of other ways of telling.for instance asking the guy where it came from, how he got it...whats the vin...etc. if he doesnt even know the obvious questions is obviously stolen

Remember, for a car to be totalled, all you have to have is the rear bumper pushed far enough to pronounce it "totalled."
HOWEVER, I would be very suspicious if all they say is.. "umm, what's a VIN #... it doesn't have any."

Even if you notify the police, what are they going to do about it? Not being a dick or anything, but there is unfortunately no possible way to trace suspension. The only way that this guy could be caught with stolen property is if he had the motor and/or body parts lying around.
All they could do is question him, and they probably wouldn't because they will be to busy with other cases. Unfortunately thats all that would happen. Now if you knew it was stolen, then you could probably build a case against him.
