Default Driving without a battery!!

Tonight after I came home and turned off the car, I found that the power was dead. When I popped the hood I saw that the positive + connection to the battery had lost contact with the battery. I had probably driven about 30min without a battery so is there anything that can go wrong with the car? Especially the electrical stuff?

Thanks for the help.

The car doesn't need the battery to run. It just needs the battery to start. Once the car is started the alternator supplies the power for the car and charges the battery. Most drag hondas don't even have a battery. I seen one honda have battery terminals on the rear trunk lid. So when they wanted to start it up they would just hook up a battery. Once it was started they would remove the battery.

To answer your question you shouldn't have any problems. Just hook it back up. You don't want to be running off your alternator because you can burn out your alternator. After you turned your car off when you got home and then reconnected the battery did you have to punch in the radio code?

This is why if your battery is dead you can still start your car by push starting it. Then the car will stay running without the battery.

you are 100% correct. you do not need the battery to drive the cr, just to start.

i hardly ever drive without a battery...only when i have my beat in my car...

batteries weigh a lot.

and weight is bad.
weight reduction is good.

hope this helps

I thiught the battery was needed to complete the circut. The altenator just charges the battery, the battery runs the car. What do you think all those wires comming off the pos lead are for???? Sure, a some race cars have no battery, but they are wired for it.]

Now that I thought about it for a second, I believe with the pos off the battery you can still drive, but with the neg off you are dead in the water.

Without a battery on the line the 12 volt bus has more electrical noise and transients on it. All well designed electronics are designed to operate with a bit flakey 12 volt bus and will survive bus transients. I know that is a serious part of my design process.

BTW the alternator will continue to self exicite and cover all load requirements of the car.

You did experience one significant transient called the alternator load dump transient when the battery disconnected. It is the most significant transient that can be generated in a car. It is casued by the battery disconnecting just as you described. It can throw a 100 Volt (50 Volt typically) 500 Milliesecond pulse on the 12 Volt bus, it can contain up to 100 joules of destructive energy. That transient is why you DIY electronic guys who just wire a 7805 regulator to the bus will have your circuit fry under just this condition.

You survived it. Rejoice. You are in the clear. Hook the battery up and go take a drive.

Regards,
BigMoose

Yes I did.
The car seems to be running fine so I guess I shouldn't be too worried.

Couldn't say it any better.

Not all cars are the same. Some cars WILL NOT run without a battery, others will. Obviously the Type R will. Not only is the battery there to start the car, but it also absorbs electrical spikes that occur during normal driving. You are lucky that your ECM wasn't damaged.
A battery can also be so dead that when you jumpstart it, as soon as you remove the jumper cables, it will shut off, even with a good alternator.

Generally this is because the battery has an internal short and tries to draw more power than the alternator can produce, that's why a car can shut off once cables are removed. But yes I agree totally that a battery also helps to soften electrical spikes!

Im sure he will try to find some way to blame you for the theft of his ITR too. At any rate, dont mind 187. He's just being himself
