best coolant for a 96 civic?
checked and i'm out of it bad. didnt relize it. my honda manual says use only honda coolant but is there any other brand i can buy from autozone or whatever and use?
Just use Honda Coolant. Not really worth cheaping out to save a few dollars, when in the long run you could run into problems with the other brand coolant and end up spending hundreds more. Just something to think about.
Most coolant is fine, I myself run straight water, for the Summer time and when winter rolls around I do a 20% coolant mix then rest water, unless you got really extreme cold temps.
Honda Type 2 is the best hands down, and for christ's sake don't run straight water! There are these really smart little japanese guys who designed the engine in your car, I think they are called engineers, and they decided that using antifreeze would be WAY better than straight water. I have a buddy who told me that they are like, a trillion times smarter than the smartest guys on Honda-Tech. That might be one of those urban legends or something though.
If water gets too hot, bye bye head gasket, cracked block, etc. If water gets too cold, H20 pump can't power through the slushy water, sticks, timing belt jumps...you see where this is going?

I use prestone 50/50 - but I live in NY. I'd swear by it though.
It doesn't matter what you use unless it's cold out. If you live in Florida or Texas you can run straight up water all year no problem - I do the 50% antifreeze / 50% water mix b/c that owns in NY. Though I just run it all year round...because I can...
Use a 50/50 mix or if you're in southern cali u can probably get away with just water..

water absorbs more heat than glycol but its not good for an aluminum system. There are additives in coolant that helps preserve parts along with lubricate the water pump. Its not smart to run pure water no matter where you live

i agree...
in the end water is still only water. People made coolant for a reason.
