Default question about welding mild steel flanges to 304 elbows

what's the proper welding rod to use when doing this? ive always used stainless flanges but now i have a project where the customer is supplying a mild flange. ive been messing around on scrap stuff and the standard mild rod i use seems to not mix well and the stainless seems likely to crack. any help would be apreciated because i know some of you guys use mild flanges with your turbo manifolds.
