Default obd0 pr3 + B20v = no vtec

I'm fairly new to obd0 (i usually do obd1 builds) and I'm not very familiar with the obd0 ecus. I've searched HT for hours attempting to educate myself on this, and I've learned that the Pr3 looks for a second O2 and knock sensor. There is no CEL however, and this is the most confusing part of all this.

problem:
vtec does not engage

Current setup:
B20 vtec
obd0 Si dist.
obd0 Pr3 ecu (manual)

no codes

Things i have tried:

-rang out all wires and ensuring their proper placement and contact with the ecu x3

-followed the Honda vtec solenoid diagnostic flowchart (found using the search) to the "t" x2

At this point I'm almost positive it has to be some kind of compatability issue, but I'm not exactly sure what to look for as far as that goes. If anyone could give me a couple pointers on Obd0 vtec, or perhaps tell me something I'm missing that'd be sweet.

thanks!

tough to diagnose without cel codes...can you try a different ecu? (another pr3)..make sure motor has been running a few minutes and temp gauge is at normal operating position...you have enough oil..speedo is working..

Do you have a VTec light installed? Or are you going by the way the engine sounds?

if u have a b20 vtec, you will hear an feel it.....

how are you running your vtec?
-do you have a piggy back system running of a vtec controller
-or is your ecu chipped?

my speedo is not working, but i still need to configure it as I am using an S2k cluster with the modifry.com ecs. I also have the cable->electronic adapter from Mark in the UK.

I'm going by the way the engine sounds... even at low throttle position, the x-over should be fairly evident. I'm running Skunk2 pro2 cams.

Right now I'm running the vtec off of nothing other than the ecu. There is no vtec controller installed. I do have an obd1 CromePro chipped P28 that i plan on using in the near future when i take this car to my next NASA event, but it has been tuned for my ITB setup and will run the car like garbage.

thanks guys!

Get an electronic speed sensor. Dont ask why because I had the same issue and no amount of modding a cable sensor to a getto rigged cable/electro one worked. Popped in a electro VSS and I had vtec. I never popped a VSS code either as I didnt have the voltage to send to the ecu. As far as the ECU knows its going 0mph @ so much rpm.

where did you purchase your electro VSS from?

*edit
nevermind I answered my own question by looking on Mark Lamond's site.

Get the electronic VSS from the cluster of the Civic Si's I believe. My first gen HF CRX had one that I use. It uses the cable speedo drive and has an electronic guage. Tap into the signal and send it to the ecu input. Done. Vtec will not engage without it.

You do need both O2 sensors as well if you don't have them installed.

If you tune with BRE, you can bypass the O2 sensors or use just one. You can download BRE from the pgmfi forum.

I have also used an electric vss from the tranny to the ecu, but that doesn't allow the cable speedo to operate.

Edit, I do see you are using a S2K cluster. You can probably just use the electric vss output on the tranny then. Nice cluster to use!

You should be able to tune well enough on OBD0 with BRE to not need to switch to OBD1. It is an awesome program.

update:

went out to the car and checked the VSS signal wire coming off of the conversion unit, it was loose. I reseated the wire and double checked power and ground for the unit as well.

...then my friend called (his car wouldn't start).

I havn't been able to check and see if this fixed my problem, but i will update the status as soon as i get back to my house. (on the road right now)
