Downshifting, Heel Toe?
i have a 96 EX coupe, D16, and im wondering what you guys do to downshift going into turns? my shifter wont go into 1st unless im doing like 10 mph or under, and im wondering if heel toeing it will work,?
ive tried practicing it but the shifter does not want to go into 1st gear.
Any Help/Tips?
Thanks

i heel n toe and downshift and stuff but i never do that into first around a corner lol.
u really shouldn't try to put it in first after 10mph anyway.

Heel-toe (or as I do it "outside of foot-toe") is an essential tool in driving smoothly. But I have never been on a track that required going into first gear. Even on the sharpest corners, like you said, you have to slow down so much to get into first, that you lose all your entry and exit speed.
Regardless on the turn, you should put time into maintaining speed and balance through the entire turn. First gear is just so low that it's almost impossible to get into it will out virtually stopping the car and then your probably only in it for 2 seconds before shifting again. If you stay in second, even though it feels like your going slower, you've eliminated two shifts, maintained speed and balance of the car. Which in the end will be faster.

From what i have always thought most Honda Trans. have a speed lock on 1st gear
But yeah, a downshift to 2nd is usually more than enough for street driving.

In autocross, and in rally there are ocassions where you need to get all the way into 1st.
Give it a healthy amount of throttle on the blip, and make sure you've really gotten your braking done and your speed down. Timing has to be really good.
Problem is that you're usually only able to stay in 1st for a second, so it can be a net loss versus just bogging it a bit in 2nd. Gear shifts cost time.

Just for the hell of it, I H-n-T into first gear while braking before a drainage dip on my street so then at 4 mph or so I can take off fast. Without H'n'Ting, it is hard to get the stick into first.
On the track, you will not have to worry about going into first, however, you will need to go into second at some tracks and H'n'Ting is almost a requirement to allow smooth downshifts.

he needs to not go into first while moving. there is no reason.

yea i know, i used to autocross a civic.
there is no point using first gear in a performance driving situation. even the tightest autocrosses still rarely go to 20mph.

i agree, i have been autoxing/track days for almost 4 years now and i have never once come across a situation of putting the car in first, ive seen some new people do it during events and i feel sorry for there transmissions! there is such a jolt in the downshift, staying in second has always proven itself for me, but then again ive never heel-toe'd during an autox either, however on the track for me its a must.

the healthy blip is key.

I put it into first all the time.
Try going up this without using first.

rev matching removed the jolting that would cause excessive wear on the transmission. heres the steps.
going 20km/p
clutch
neutral
rev engine to 4000 or 5000 rpm. you want to rev it to where the rpm will be once you shift. so going 20km/p in first should be between 4-5g
clutch
1st
and you off with a little tire squeal
