Who thinks this is a fair price for a cage...
Right now I have a 6pt roll bar in my hatch. I need to get it converted to a 10 pt. So what I need is A-pillar bars, halo, rocker to rocker bar, and d-bars installed. I was quoted $1400 to do this conversion. That includes the necessary materials (minus the d-bars which I have) and labor.
So is $1400 a fair price?
And spare me the "how much is your life worth" speech too.

i just got a quote for the same thing for 1300 by the same person who built my 10pt cage.
the fabricator said its harder to convert cause when you build the cage you can drop it by cutting holes into the floor.
So yeah thats a fair price

where was this . Piper Motorsports i bet
they are expensive but do good work.
don't forget, they most likely have to cut the welds on your existing cage, and possibly cut out the floor plates so the cage can be dropped down in order to allow them to add in and weld the new bars. then they have to weld it in all over again.

It wasn't Piper motorsports, i've never heard of them. It was Insane Race Fabrication or something like that.
never heard of insane.
Piper does the majority of "track" cars in this area (northern Virginia, etc). as in Road race!
don't really consider drag strip as a "track" it's a STRIP. haha
never heard anyone say, "i'm going to the drag track tonight"

Forgot to add, you shouldn't mix chromoly and mild steel. Plus SCCA doesn't like chromoly much any more. Most people don't weld it correctly and there is no benefit to using it. It cost more and SCCA/PCA/BMW/HSR doesn't allow for smaller tube dimensions with chromoly so there is little benefit to using it.
You can use 4130 if you send it for testing according to their specs.
Nhra has done exensive testing, SCCA is out of line.
The price quoted sounds pretty fair to me. I don't think I would do it for less.

i got my 10pt molly cage with window net done intalled and everything done for 950, from a really well known cage place here in the midwest. First i had the 6pt like you but change of rules required me to get a 10pt and window net and they added on for another 400. 1400 sounds high. But good work is hard to find these days
Here is a good discussion about the differences in chromoly and mild steel chassis.

SCCA just saw no reason to deal with the problems that come from having amateurs weld chromoly cages together. Plus the cost of Chromoly isn't economical for most forms of motorsports. Why does your 10sec race car need a chassis that is good to 6 secs? You don't and it is a waste of money to build it to that spec.
I won't build a standard SCCA 6-8pt cage for less than $1500+ materials. That is still a bargain for how much time goes into a good cage. not to mention the liability associated with race car work.

Underpriced is an understatement. I won't even consider doing a 6pt in mild steel for 950... lol

dude, 950 for a chromoly cage is unbelievable. As in I don't believe that guy would charge that... That's a $1800 cage out of my shop, and I'm considered a "reasonably priced" shop.

Well, I guess I can see why it only cost him $950. The cage builder half assed it.
