Default 160k on Original clutch.. Whats a good clutch kit for my GSR? Should I go OEM?

My teg has 160,000 on its ORIGINAL clutch. I can't believe it either. Its still grabbing fine. But after I drive on the freeway for awhile and I exit its really hard to put into all gears, lots of tension. It does not grind at all I just have to use extra force to put it into gear. In the morning when the engine is cold and I'm just driving in the city (no freeway) my tranny is fine, goes into gear easily.. Weird situation...

Anyways.. What good clutch kits are out there?? I'm leaning towards OEM because afterall I got 160k out of this one and its still going. I dont baby my car either I just maintain it VERY well.

changing the fluid helps a lot if you havent changed it in a while, but you said you maintain it well, so its probably already done

i agree...change the tranny fluid and see if that clears it up. The last thing you want to do is spend a few hundred dollars and invest a few hours into a useless project

Trust me, you will know when you need a new clutch.

It sucks when you have to stop on a hill. Slip the clutch, let it all the way out, and it still barely catches.

Like above... Try a few different things first, but thats a bunch of miles for a stock clutch.

I actually changed it yesterday with Amsoil Synthetic. Its slightly better but I havent drove on the freeway yet to see if there is any differences. I know it should go out soon because that IS alot of miles on a stock clutch.

The freeway should not matter. I'm telling you that you need to stop on hills if it's your clutch going bad

BTW: Not sure about honda clutches, but my 93 saturn beater went until 147,000 miles until it needed a clutch

Stopping on a hill is fine. I dont have any problems with the clutch at all.

Once again. When I'm city driving the tranny is perfectly fine. Its when I jump on the freeway drive for 30 min going 80.. Then when I'm about to stop I press in the clutch take it out of 5th then I IMMEDIATELY notice its extremely hard shift in/out of every gear. No grinding at all though, clutch not slipping either.

I think it HAS to be the clutch since I have sooo many miles on it. Maybe the heat of driving on the freeay is causing some sort of weird thing to happen to a really old clutch with this many miles on it?? I dunno..

What you have just described is not the clutch going bad. The clutch master cyclinder may be going bad, and not allowing the clutch to fully disengage.

When your clutch is bad, it will slip on you.

Agree - this may be be a master (or slave I guess) cylinder issue.

not entirely true man, i had no clutch slippage what so ever! I thought it was my synchros...but i was not!

I just replaced my clutch, slave cyl, and axles..... what he is describing sounds like the springs are shot in his clutch or a leaky slave cyl. Had it happen in my car, and my dirt bike, the clutch was not slipping, but the springs were not allowing it to dis-engage or engage, easily. If you beat on your motor even in a more than mild matter, **** is going to break, especially oem.
I reccomend going stage one clutch if your going all motor, stage two if your going to be making some serious STREET power. 3,4,5 clutches i imagine are almost not streetable....no experience with them, but by judging by my stage two, i cant even imagine a higher level for the street, stop go traffic is bad enough with stage 2....

If you are having to shove your shifts into gear, YOU ARE DAMAGING YOUR SYNCHROS. I just replaced my clutch 3 weeks ago with a exedy stage 2 with a exedy light weight flywheel. My presure plate was so bad the springs were literaly loose, as i could spin them with my fingers, and a part of the aluminum holding the spring fell off when I took it out.

Im pretty sure you need a new clutch, take it to a mechanic or two and see what they say, no one can sit here and tell you what is wrong with your car without driving it, or being an experienced mechanic...

all i gotta say is, the longer you drive it f'd up, the more your going to pay in the long run for more broken parts....speaking from experience...
Devin

take it or leave, everyone has an opinion...

I mean the clutch is fine unless it slips.

You may have problems with:

Pressure plate
Slave cyclinder
bearing

Thanks for the reply guys.

When I changed my fluid it came out clean. But I replaced it anyway with fresh Amsoil Synthetic oil.

I drove the car today. It runs perfectly fine. Goes into gear quite easily like when I first bought my car 8 years ago. I just starts giving me problems when I drive it for a while.

I sometimes wish the clutch will die on me so I can change the clutch and the slave cylinder together.

I will check for leaks tonight.

i put a exedy oem clutch and fidanza aluminum flywheel in the gf's 93 civic ex coupe.

clutch only has about 5k miles on it and feels just like stock.....

id recommend you getyourself an exedy oem clutch or maybe even one of the auto part store clutches if you want to go that cheap route.....

I dont care about price. I just want a quality reliable japanese clutch.

I bought a new car 8 months ago. But I cannot get rid of my teg. I'm still so attached to this car.
