Default 98 Civic ECU

Is there anyway to change settings on a 98 civic ecu? I dont know anything about them so I guess this is a n00b question. I want my car to shift better. its a automatic and its gay but I had no choice. Any suggestions?

you can get an obdII-obdI converter. and then you can run a 92-95 ecu, which is more flexible for chipping. This would allow you to change the rev limit, speed governor and vtec engagement. I dont think its worth doing on a stock engine.

Thats an option but I'm still looking for whatever is the best in the long run. Its not bone stock and I am planning to do a mini me swap so I'm still not sure what I'm going to do. Anyone else got any suggestions?
