Default B20 Vtec Turbo...... FACT or FICTION

I'm about to build a bulletproof turbo B20 Vtec from the bottom up. Just last night I ran into a guy and I was telling him about my motor build that I was about to do and this is what he told me;

"Why are you going to make it into a Vtec motor if your going to put a turbo on it?" He also said "a Vtec WON"T make a differance if your going to turbo the B20 because the boost from the trubo will eliminate/take over the Vtec anyway. So you should not even waste your money making it into a Vtec and just build up the head that it cames with."

Now I ask you Honda-Tech, is what this guy told me TRUE or NOT because just like everyone else I really don't wont to waste my money. BUT if this is true then what Vtec head is good to go with the B20 a B16 head or a GSR head? and with what ECU?

Thanks for any help guys

false... a non-vtec head flows about as much air as a 5hp lawn mower. its not the fact that a b16 or gsr head has vtec, they just flow that much better

from my experiences, vtec helps spool the turbo quicker

a p8r head flows the same as them and its a non vtec head.......same port/casting and vtec sized valves.....

Long story short my b20 turbo made
292whp 219wtq at 11 psi

I did a b16 head conversion and made
355whp 284wtq at 11 psi

Nothing changed internally, same amount of boost.

Best 700 dollars i ever spent

I clicked and saw your motor setup and got a few questions.

First, What type of ECU are you using on your setup? because thats one thing im real up in the air with. I pretty much got my build all set up and mapped out on what im going to do to my 92' EG this coming fall winter and spring (my goal is 400hp). But when it comes to what ECU to use when I start to build my B20, im so lost as hell. so i hope you or someone can shed some light on that for me.

Second, I saw that your not using a block guard on your B20? Now from what i heard from people is that. When you boost a B20 vtec or just build a B20 vtec n/a that it is a MUST that you use a block guard when building a B20. Now, i ask you and all of Honda-tech is that FACT or FICTION ?

Im doing most of the build myself (so i can take more pride in the motor when its done) except for the machine work like boring port n polishing etc. My goal is to get my 92' EG to 400hp or more so I can beat on all the evo's, sti's, wrx's, srt-4's, and my all time hate the mustang's theres WAY TO MANY of all of those cars here in Philly. And I almost for forgot the guy with the white EG with the GSR and Full-Race turbo setup. Ill be coming for ya this spring of 08' **** ......lol

Thanks for all the help so far guys.

you mean a vtec HEAD? how the expletive does vtec spool a turbo when it ******* engages later than a gt40r full spools on a b16?

your turbo spooling has everything to do with torque. and when it spools has many factors. Motor torque, A/R size, Trim, Charge Piping, PSI, Wastegate size, and Wastegate spring rate.

Most GT40R setups on a B16 would spool between 4500 and 5000 rpm. Vtec would hit around 5600 if im right.

Even though your turbo spools at say 4500, you're not exactly at full boost. When Vtec engages at 5600 your top end torque numbers will increase dramatically and will in turn spin the turbine better and more efficiently. Reaching your maximum boost before a non-Vtec head.

Hope that helps both strictly.business and shotime

your stock civic ecu will work, if you end up with a vtec head, add vtec to the ecu.

Non-vtec cam = designed/OPTIMIZED for use from idle to redline

Vtec cam = one set of lobes designed/OPTIMIZED for idle to 2/3 of redline, 2nd set of lobes designed/OPTIMIZED for 2/3 of redline to redline.

A cam that is 'best' for low-mid range power is not the best for making power at redline. Conversely, a cam made for high rpm power will make less low-mid range power.

If that person had the presence of mind to investigate how VTEC works, he'd say 'Oh ****, I was a retard!'. Vtec should spool the turbo faster, as you should be making more torque (given the same ports/IM/displacement) during low rpm. The fact is it doesn't seem that way since the IM and head was setup for higher rpm, meaning it looses some low/mid range compaired to having a LS long-runner IM on it.

No actually i'm well aware of when boost would spool on a GT40R.

My friend drives a Boosted stock block B16 with a GT30R. With a 3lb wastegate spring it doesnt spool until 4500'ish and continues to creep to 12psi at 8k.

A GT40R is larger and requires more torque. With a 10lb spring you'll spool aprox between 4-5k.

When are you thinking. You are well aware that the higher the number of the turbo the larger. I think you're thinking of a GT28 Disco Potato or something.

says enough i think, outside the fact that a vtechead outflows an ls head allday long, you are provided with stock cams wich are ideal for turbo. gsr/ctr/itr cams are all well proven turbo cams

Of the B-Series motors. B20s and B18C blocks have the thinnest sidewalls. Stock block wise, i'd say on a B20 use one. GSR/TypeR i wouldnt worry about it.

You just cant really go oversized unless you sleeve it.
