ok so this buddy of mine bought a 92 civic dx and when he bought it the man told him that it had a swapped engine in it and the man didnt know nothing about it, but when he would drive the car it sounded like it had vtec and the cover didnt say vtec it just has a regular honda cover so when we decided to look at the type of engine we saw that it is a D15B engine. So i just wanna know is the D15B engine vtec? i just kinda find it hard to believe that if his car is vtec, we are barely finding out 6 months later
so is it??
i dont see a solenoid

heres the stamp

If it sounded like it, and has a d15b stamp, it's vtec.
Also, look for the vtec solenoid. It's behing the valvecover (left side if your looking at it from the front)
It's like a 2" soda can looking thing. Hard to miss.

Not all d15b's are VTEC. From what I remember, there are 3 versions of it. The first is non-VTEC, the second is VTEC, and the third has the 3 stage VTEC.

He said his is a d15b (no number after the "b"). Unless he omitted that last digit...

there IS a powerband, my d15 had it, not exactly vtec but u can notice it in 3rd gear. and maybe the engine was taken out an put back in without the vtec hooked up cause someone didnt know how do to it?

what? gsrs have normal vtec, and 3stage=12v/16v/VTAAAKKK.

It doesn't have "2 stages of VTEC"
It has "VTEC"
Then it has IABs (secondary butterflies) that open up to allow more air to flow.
Only one VTEC stage though.
REGULAR VTEC (like on a D16Z6) has "2 stages" - 16 valve regular, and "VTEC lobes" - VTEC-E uses 12v up to like 2500 RPM then uses them all for economy purposes.
"3 stage" uses the 2 regular stages (regular valve use, and VTEC) then it adds the 12 valve useage under 2500 on top of that.
So you use 12 valves up to like 2500, then you use 16 valves, then VTEC engages much like a Z6 or Y8 - 3 stages.

All VTEC motors have "2 stage VTEC" - it's 2 stage from the point that it's "on" - or it's "off" - "regular" or "VTEC" - the second bump in the GSR is secondary butterflies, not "another stage of VTEC."
Once again people on Honda-Tech confuse VTEC with Nitrous.
"stages of VTEC"
"I got 4 stages of VTEC here and I'm not afraid to use 'em!!"

My thoughts exactly...
My thoughts exactly...
Here's another thought that just occured to me:
If you know where the solenoid should be, look for a block-off plate. If there is evidence of one being installed, then you probably have a d15b VTEC engine, but the previous owner "removed the VTEC".
I doubt that's the case, but it is possible.
