Just about home from work today and I hear this clanking noise on my next turn. Think to myself...hmmmm...that can't be good.

Is this the cv boot that just went? Also any rough idea what it would cost for me to fix?

 

I doubt that the boot just went. It has probably been that way for a while if you hear clunking. The easiest thing to do at this point is replace the whole axle. $70 at your local parts store, and somebody should be able to put it in for <$100.

 

chances are if its clicking its alreay dead.. thats a new joint + boot seal

Honestly today was the fist time I heard it clunking. Maybe it popped when I turned the wheel all the way to get a look behind the tire?

Had my two front axles replaced a few months back for $220. Parts and labour. I live out in the country though...

I drove around with my car clunking for a few months and it progressively got worse. Replace it when you can...

 

Replace the whole axle. You'll more than likely be flushing away money if you buy just the boot. It'll save you headaches in the end.

 

Only other question is how much can I really drive on this now?

 

Can't put a time on it. Sometimes you can go for months, sometimes days.

 

- Go to autozone
- Get a new axle for $75+core deposit
- Get a 32mm socket
- A pitman puller or balljoint fork as well
- Get lots of beer
- Replace that bitch
- Enjoy autozones lifetime warranty and shitty rebuilt cv's

 

That boot looks freshly torn. If you can remove the axle, take the boot off, and separate the joint from the shaft, inspect the bearings for galling or scoring. If the ***** shine right up, a boot replacement is all that is required.

Judging by the lack of dirt in the grease that is flown about the knuckle, that joint should be plenty fine.

A boot is like less than $10. Inspect the axle before you go replacing what could very well be a perfectly good axle.

 

if its a single cam you dont need the balljoint crap. and yeah if you hear clicking then the boots been ripped for a while and the joint has gone bad

 

ok so I ended up having both axels replaced. My mechanic said the drivers side wasn't in good shape either. No big deal...

But I get home and then leave to run out and notice fluid on the driveway. I pull the car out and jack it up....fluid all over the friggin place!

Sorry if this doesn't make much sense...I honestly have no clue what I am describing.
I get under the car and the fluid is leaking from the center point where I guess the two axels go into? Now the messed up part is that if I grab the metal part that looks like it goes into the middle, I can actually slide it a little!!
^^If you look at my first pic there is the black tube looking part that goes off to the left of the pic. Where that meets in the middle is the part that moves.

WTF is matter with this thing now? Biggest question is if this is even safe to drive back to the mechanic.

 

they messed up your axle seals when putting in the axles.. Take it back

 

It's probably leaking from the transmission. Passenger side axle might not be seated in.

 

yeah they need to fix that for you. the labor "should" be free if it's an honest shop. the two seals are something like $15-$20 total, so don't worry if they charge you for the parts.

 

He will do the right thing and not charge me. He has worked on every car I have owned and also other cars the family has had. This is the first time I have ever had an issue after having work done.

The big question is how safe is it for me to drive the car up to the shop? Figure it's about a 5 mile trip

 

Buy a new axle, easiest way.

 

just make sure you have fluid in the trans. i doubt you've lost a whole lot from a leaking axle seal.

Well, he did say there was a lot of fluid.

It should be safe to drive 5 miles as long as there is some transmission fluid in there.
