Busted cv join boot? Broken axel? Broken cv joint or just ripped boot?
Guys,
My cv join boot is slit in half and totally not intact at all. I have not noticed anythign unusual. What are some signs of a bad axe or cv joint? Should i be concerned or is this just a simple change of the boot??
Mike

any dirt in the grease is a bad sign.
any knocking or clicking or funny vibration in sterring when turning is a bad sign.
Usually it is easier and safer to just get a new axle. There is not much of a price difference and it saves you from having to repack the grease. Plus if you are unsure if any damage occured to your joint this takes away that uncertainty.
cheers

it will just fling grease all over the inside of your rim and start clicking eventually but you could probably drive it for a long time like that.
if you catch it right away and there isnt a lot of dirt and debris you can pull the axle and replace the boot itself which is pretty cheap.(less than $10)
you can also probably find someone selling a used one it good condition pretty cheap.($5-$20 maybe)
or you could go buy a new on from your local parts store.($80-$100 probably)

If your CV boot busted, just buy a new one. When you get a new boot, it comes with all the "new grease" and clamp to put it on. Its no big deal, just put it up on a lift, and clean the inside of your wheel/rim. There is no need to buy a whole new axle for $40.
EDIT: The longer you wait to change the boot, the better chance you have of breaking your axle. But NO your axle is not broken just because you have grease all over the place.
