Default Hard to shift into gear....?

For some reason it's hard for me to shift into gear.
1rst seems fine, 2nd is tough, and 3rd and fourth are real tough.

When the car is not running, the gears seam fine when I go through the sequence. But as of late it's like I have to force it into gear. There is no grinding, so I don't think it is my synchros.

Any ideas?

Might be your clutch. My previous car exhibited similar symptoms when the clutch went. I think it's the throwout bearing...the clutch gripped fine, but would not completely disengage.

But before you go replacing clutch assemblies, check the fluid level! If it's low, fill it. That might help. Also check your master and slave clutch cylinders for leakage (a Haynes manual will point these out for ~$12). HTH.

How ironic, mine just start doing that too. I was about to post a thread on it too. You think it's the clutch, even if it's not slipping?

slipping is usually related to the clutch disc not the throwout bearing. if the clutch engages/disengages fine, it might be the release bearing maybe pressure plate, and possibly other clutch components (master cylinder, etc)

How long does the stock clutch last? Should I worry about it and go change it right away or would it last for awhile longer? I had a slip clutch on my other car and when it die, I can sense it coming and the clutch just doesn't disengage. What would happen w/ a bad releasing bearing?

Thanks

Possibly what happened to me...I couldn't shift into gear with the engine on. However, once I got going I could power shift (not pretty, but it worked). If you are stopped with the clutch pedal on the floor and the vehicle creeps forward, it's not fully disengaging.

the most obvious symptom of a bad release bearing is a 'clack' and 'shrrrssshh' when you let your foot off the clutch pedal (w/the car at a stand still). it will go away when the pedal is pressed and when you pop it out again it will make the pop and start the grinding sound. symptoms during driving would be difficulty getting into certain (or random) gears and often having to disengage and engage the clutch a couple of times to get it into gear. i replaced my bad release bearing 3 months ago (55k miles on stock clutch) and these were the symptoms. shifting like a dream ever since HTH

i only payed parts (i did it myself) which was about $45 for the bearing (new from dealer). if you go to a shop, it will cost (in labor) about what a clutch job would cost, because you'll need to drop the tranny to get to it

i'd say about $200-350
