Intake for the R
I am using my friends log in... I want to put a intake on the R. Im not sure what to go with. In the past i have always had an AEM cai on my swapped civics. Is this good enough for the R? What can anyone recommend?
I had the comptech icebox for my Si and i liked it. Mugen is proven to be the best for the type R. you can search for the dyno results, but it will set you back $700. btw with the comptech intake for my Si i had to get the sri intake arm and the icebox. With type Rs I see people just putting on the icebox with the stock intake arm, why is that? whats the difference?
Maybe the HP gain with a stock arm isnt that much different then the aftermarket comptech arm. Plus its cheaper. I see the Icebox for about 160 and the intake for 180. It also says that if you purchase just the ice box, atleast a filter upgrade is required. I am just looking for power without insane noise. I have driven an R with the mugen intake and its so nice! Quiet performance. Plus it looks like it just belongs in that engine bay! I know they are about 700 but my friend got one used and damn near new for about 500!! Anyone one got one they want to let go of? doubt it...
If you're looking for quiet, DON'T get the AEM. It is by far the most obnoxious sounding piece I have ever heard, especially at VTEC ...... and I love it!
Just generalizing, but:
Mugen = Balance between throttle response and peak power. Utilizes a reservoir style box so air is ready when you hit the throttle. Doesn't suffer from heat-soak. Really expensive. Excellent all-round intake. Power across the board.
AEM CAI= Peak power. In some Dynos tests I've seen over the years, it makes more power than the Mugen, but WAY later. Throttle response is sub-par because it ditches the stock reservoir ... when you hit the throttle, air has to start at the filter and come all the way up the tube into the IM before you feel anything (The mugen maintains air circulation so it is always on tap). Suffers from heatsoak pretty bad when hot. Half the price of the Mugen unit. Tried and proven horsepower. LOUD.
I use the AEM. Driven countless cars with the Mugen. Love them both for different reasons.

Mugen if you're baller enough.
If you're not, a suitable substitute would be: Samco "King Motorspots" 3" intake tube (Designed to replace stock arm for Mugen intake), with a BPI velocity stack, and K&N filter.
PM user neo_, I believe he is selling his exact same setup.

The Icebox works just fine with the stock arm and filter.

I think you need to post pics of your car before we can help you decide on an intake........

If that pic is the pic of the OP's car I would guess it is Jim's old car. Then I would have to ask where is the Mugen intake that was on it?
