Default How do i turn off the Speed governor on a 1997 honda civic ex if there is one?

I just started with my civic and i've put on a aem cold air intake, JDM catback and exhaust, and ordering a new ecu chip. But i was wondering if my car had a speed governor because when i hit 100mph it switch's to 4th gear and at about 3k rpm and stops?

My Ex takes about 2 hours to get to 100 mph. I say don't even worry about it.

it's got an electronic gov. for a reason. that's an extreme load on your transmission and tires (if they aren't much better than stock) these cars can also get slight lift at those speeds making it harder to control. if you plan on racing this thing on a track come back with this question later when you have some hp, safety equipment and a manual transmission.

but since you asked, the chip can be programmed to supress the gov. the specific one you are getting, i don't know, but that's how to do it, with a chip.

again, you'll blow a hole in your transmission if you keep trying to break 100.

x2

Please clear this up and tell us you are doing some sort of salt field run in a semi stock class and not doing this to go "fast" on the street.

Last time I checked there's no roads in Tennessee that had speed limits over 100mph.

Therefore you're not going 100mph legally.

This guy hit it right on the head:
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by hondamark35 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">it's got an electronic gov. for a reason. that's an extreme load on your transmission and tires (if they aren't much better than stock) these cars can also get slight lift at those speeds making it harder to control. </TD></TR></TABLE>

It's not as much of a load on the trans as you might think - top speeds usually aren't - it's hard accel that is.

Though you're right about the other part, the faster you go, since A) the front end isn't flush to the ground, and B) the bottom is relatively smooth the higher the car lifts up. It starts to lift up high which decreases the effectiveness of the suspension, that fights the gravity of the car which makes it oscillate. When it starts to oscillate + the raised suspension, your left-right roll increases, with the increased body roll, you're more likely to lose control of the car. At 100mph on a 2 lane road you'd be very lucky to get it back.

I'm not exactly one to talk about "going fast being a bad thing" with some of the absurd speeds I've achieved just to say I've gone that fast. Though in a camaro or trans am you're talking a totally different ball game than a stock civic, especially in an automatic where you can't regulate your torque through the gears.

You WON'T exceed 100mph in the quarter mile with your current setup, especially with an automatic transmission which on 5th and 6th gen Hondas are slow as ****. There's no need to go over 100mph but there's one way to do it.

My friend (THC07) told me how to remove the speed limiter on an OBD-II ECU without chipping it or anything, but I forgot how, I'll send him the link to this post and it'll be up to him as to whether or not he wants to tell you.

It's idiots like you that get people killed. At 100mph you lose control & crash you're done. In a 5.0 or something at least you'll have a chance, but in a 5th or 6th gen honda w/o a roll cage you're fucked.

Let me guess, you have a baseball cap, you wear it backwards or to the side, you always wear baggy clothes, you're white but are obsessed with rap music, your front seat-back is in the back seat, you have a crappy stereo w/ loud and unclear speakers, two 12" subs w/ no 32 bit adjustability, and you nail the throttle from a stoplight.

Am I wrong?

Well thanks for the help, but i dont wanna go over 100mph on the freeway or anything like that. My friend told me that taking off the governor would give more Hp and stuff. I really dont know that much about car's i just started in the import thing I'm more of a 4x4 guy myself , but this looked kind of fun so i thoguht i'd try it. Also i don't wear baseball cap's sideways, listen to rap music or have a shitty system in my car. Just a normal guy looking for something new to do.

If you believed your friend that removing a speed governor on an automatic Civic would give you "more HP and stuff" then I'm assuming you were just as bad at being a 4x4 guy as you are an import guy. Do some research, kid. You have an automatic economy car with squishy suspension and 125 horsepower - don't go over 80mph or you're going to get someone killed, most likely yourself.

It's important that every driver learns to control HIMSELF before he learns to control his car.

Im sure as hell not gonna tell him how to remove his speed gov.

yeah go buy a performance ecu with vtec at like 3500. that will get you past 150mph.

want to go fast? get a swap and keep it on the track.

You need to get new friends.

At 100mph your tires are about 4 inches wide. That's NOT good.

Save that **** for the track. I know. I've had $1300 on tickets before. Money I wish i had in my suspension.

Ok. I own a 99 honda civic ex. All stock AND auto trans. Ive done as far as 120mph in my car. Why? Cuz we like to see how fast our cars will go. If governd it has to get REprogrammed by a pro. Otherwise to go faster on the track or streets its close to impossible. Im training to race pro n so my car is soon getting a k series n manual swap with upgrades. Adding roll cage n drag tires also.
