Default which is better for autoX? b16 or d16- weight vs. power

i know its bench racing but i have been wondering about this for a while. the D16 is lighter but the B16 has 50 more horse power. so everything else being equal is the 50 horsepower enough to make up for the weight or will it just be too front heavy? i reallize they would be in different classes. im just trying to understand the difference of their strengths.

Driver swap...

Seriously... the most improvment you can get is with track time.

The D16 has just as much torque, or more, up to a certain point as the B16 does. And most of that falls within AutoX RPMs.

Plus, the D16 is ~75lbs lighter in one of the most important areas of the car (over the front wheels).

On a roadcourse the B16 will be the better motor due to HP, but on an autox course the D16 will be just as good, or better, in most cases.

i'm assuming you mean D16a6? is the car an SI? definitely good setup for STS or STS2 (crx)
look on SCCAforums.com for IanBaker. his 88 CRX Si runs nearly as quickly as SM cars in our region.(talking 1 second off 400hp evo's with 285mm R comps). so that should tell you about the importance of HP vs. Driver Skill.

Skill for the win

and for the class that a B16 would put you in (SM) you aren't going to be competitive. K20 or B20/vtec would be a better choice. and you Still will not be able to get down to the minimum allowed weight with the 2 liters.!

Don't tell him that the D16a6(STS2 car) is about the same or better than a b16(SM2 car). When I start beating him, he will tell me that I have an advantage with my engine/car. HAHA

SM=EVO. end of story.
b16 vs d16? class wise your better off with a d. a b16 isnt enough of an upgrade to make it worth while in the class it goes in. yea, i was 4th fastest on sunday with a b16. but when its an EM car its realy not anything to brag about.

yes d16a6. my car is an hf, but thats besides the point.

OK, so would Ian Baker be faster or slower in the same car (might need springs to compensate for the weight) with a b16 instead?

If your car is a hf, swap in a D16A6 and go CSP. That's what I've got. It may not win the class outright at Nationals but I'm hoping to trophy with it this year.

Even if competitiveness isn't your goal now it's good to prepare a car within the rules of a class that it could be competitive in. That way you don't end up buying parts twice once you decide to be more competitive in the class. And, the D16A6 engine is better for autox anyway.

D16A6 in an HF with LSD will make an excellent CSP car. The same setup with a B16 would most likely not autocross any faster, possibly slower.

well, i actually have a b16 in the car now. i realize i still have a lot to learn as far as driving but i just think i would have more fun in CSP. i would pax better and be more competitive in my area. i just think it would be less discouraging (sp). then if i get good there throw on a SC and play with the big boys.

i'd say just drive it as it is and keep getting faster.
if you want a competitive car, i'd say the best class for that would be CSP.
And my other suggestion would be STS2, but can't run STS2 with the D16a6. need the Si for that.
