Knocking Engine (Goes when the plug on the injector to number 2 Cylinder is unplugged)
Hey Guys,
My engine has recently started to tap around 2.5k rpm upwards. Its like a really loud tappet and apparently according to 3 mechanics it sounds top end.
Its loudest when the car is cruising and seems to stop/quieten under acceleration or deceleration. It also does it if you just rev it in neautral.
If you unplug the plug that joins onto the 2nd injector from the right, therefore cutting off cylinder 2, it stops.
Some people have suggested loose spark plugs, but they are all tight. As I say the tappets are apparently adjusted fine and there is nothing obviously wrong.
What could this be guys? I understand its very hard 2 diagnose without being here but any ideas?
The oil is spot on and was only changed like 500 miles ago (3 weeks). Its fully synthetic 5w-40. I did read yesterday that this may be to thin for the ITR engine. Could this be causing a knock on only one cylinder?

You've had 3 mechanics look it over and you're still asking this? The point of taking it to a mechanic is to diagnose and fix the problem and it's still not even diagnosed?
Shouldn't be your oil FWIW...

Yea its still undiagnosed. These mechanics obviously wont know a B18 as well as the guys on here. Was hoping one of you would have had the same thing.
They are all saying it will be bucks to take it apart to diagnose as well. Im just trying to do this cheaply.
Is rod knock the same as piston slap? Sorry Im so green on this...

probably not injectors as you mention it goes away with accel/decel and is rpm dependant. IMO
Rod knock and piston slap are two different things. Pistons slap is a condition where the sides(skirts) of the pistons are worn and there is a larger clearance between the pistons and the sleeves. Mostly noticeable when the engine is colder and the aluminum pistons have not expanded yet with heat.
Rod knock is noticed when the clearance at the rod bearing is beyond specs to the point that the rod/bearings slap back and forth on the crank journal between stroke positions. Especially noticeable on load and unload, i.e. reving the engine up and letting it rev down as vacuum pulls as an upward load on the piston. Hope that helps

Thanks for your help guys! Its defo not the injectors as I swapped them all earlier and the noise is still only on cylinder 2.
Soichiro - You say that rod knock is more noticable on accel/deceraltion. My knocking is most noticable when cruising and seems to go away on accel and decel.
Is this problem more likely to be piston slap?
I have started to strip the engine tonight and should be down to removing the cams etc on the weekend. Are the LMAs a candidate that would stop knocking if one cylinder was disconnected at the injector?
Thanks for any help!
