Is a battery relocation smog legal?

...relocated in the trunk

or would it fail the visual?

Since afaik batteries aren't part of any emissions equipment you should be fine.

Does this also apply when trying to bar a b series engine? Would the ref make you put the battery in the engine bay?

I doubt it. When I got my engine reffed I was using a tiny nrg cell battery mounted in a different spot than stock and they didn't care.

as long as the emissions stuff isn't tampered with, you should be good.
