Default Kumho 712's or Pirelli P700's?

Need a 195/50 tire for my beater. Something cheap that will last a decent while driving 20 miles a day.

Opinions wanted.

Also, anyone know anything about the new Kumho Ecsta MX?

700's all the way

712's don't grip and are loud.

712's are loud as hell. Chris (topspeed86) has them on his Civic and they squeal like a ****. But they are killer in the rain.

I would've ordered 712's for daily driving... 712's are awesome during out rain storms. I mean, you aren't gonna race that CX anyway...

Ah correction! If I find out after my first auto-x in the turbo R that it just aint going to work, then my CX will come out for duty. It's light enough and should be decently quick with the Si motor. I'll need some strut bars maybe, but it should still be fun to auto-x. So the tires will come in handy I think.

I would get 700-z's over 712s any day of the week.. they aren't GREAT in wet weather but neither are 712s.. specially when you have boost and torque.

Honestly, both tires suck for autox. Plus, I've had a heck of a time keeping the P700Z's balanced. They just seem to grow oval as the miles rack on.

My personal recommendation for a cheap autox/street tire would be the Sumitomo HTR 200 or HTR Z, but you look like you've already made your purchase.

Hmm.. I never had that problem with the 700Zs.. the 712s are VERY balanzed though and required very very very little weight which did impress me.. the biggest problem I have with the 700-z's if that they seem to LOVE screws/nails/etc and blow out easier than other tires I've owned..

Never looked into those summitto tires before.

I do already own some Kumho 712's on my stock ITR wheels. They are good in the rain but a few things dont impress me with them. They balance fine on the machine, but once you drive with them they arent very smooth at all. Especially in the morning when they are cold, they vibrate a lot.

I'll try the P700's and see what happens.

Damn.. I noticed that on my conquest but just assumed it was due to the damage from jumping the car in a rally event and that I just got used to it after a few.. never thought it would be the tires.. that's interesting

Do you guys have any experience with the p700z in the 1/4? Are they just as good as the stock itr tires or how do they compare with falken azeniz.

This could be contributed to the compound used in Kumho tires. Some tires get "flat spots" when they are heated (driven for a while), then cooled over night. "Flat spots" are not the type you get when you lock up your tires, but just the way tire cools down and has its compound "memorize" the "flat spot" in relation to the ground that it touches.

I'm not kidding with this "flat spot" thing... it was on Sport Car mag a few months ago... even though they say it only happens to softer race rubbers.

The P700Z isn't in the same league with the stock ITR tires or the Azenis. Remember, the P700Z is from the 80's.

I absolutely HATED driving on track with the stock Potenza tires. Those things suck, IMO. The only complaint I've heard about the Falkens is their longevity. Other than that, most seem to be happy with them. At $51 per tire, the P700 can't be beat.

The P700 is a great tire for the money... When I first got them I was concerned with the low treadwear rating but I have been running them for a good 2.5 years and they aren't even close to reaching the tread bar.....

Pirelli P700z= decent street tire

I've had the stock 010 , 712-z and 700z on my R.

of those, the 010 has the most grip, but are very noisey, stiff and rough riding.

712-z were smooth, quiet, grip/handle good to very good, but not as well as the original 010. they did squeal at limits.

the 700z, I just put on about 500 miles ago. Turn in is a bit quicker, but has an odd tendency to "wiggle/squirm" in setting up for some corners at higher(50-70) speeds. grip is close but not as good as the 712s, either. a bit more noise than the 712, but much better than the 010. to me, not as good a tire as the 712 all around.
perhaps they'll improve as they wear, but for now I don't care for them as a performance tire.

for my vote, I'll be trying something else after the 6-8k miles it takes for me to wear out a set of tires.

for daily driving, either the 700z or 712-z will be more than what you need.
