Rattling Engine
Hi I'm new to the forum. Some guy posted a topic I guess a couple of months ago, and aside from all the flaming the guy got, I read it and it sounded sort of like the problem I have with the car now with a few essential differences. He was complaining about a rattling noise on the right side of his car with no AC working.
First of all, He was talking about a delSol, and I have an 02 DX 4 door. Which shouldn't matter much because the engines are essentially the same. Second, I'm a cheap *** and I have no AC in the car. Third, it's a stick. Again, I'm a cheap *** and I like to save on gas.
To add to that situation, the rattling happens in the same spot when the car is idling for a little over a couple minutes, but really gets going when I pop the clutch to start moving. It goes away once I get moving after punching through 2nd gear.
It's really annoying, and again, I'm a cheap Pollack and will not go to a mechanic, because the rednecks around here will rape me on the price one for having a Civic and not a truck, and two ... just because I look dumb, I guess.
Anyone have any ideas/suggestions/comments? Should I follow the directions in the post that the previous guy had (because those were nice and quite elaborate), is there something else going on, or is there nothing wrong at all?
Sorry for being long-winded. Figured it would be good because it's my first post, and probably not going to be the last ... at least y'all know who you're dealing with

First of all, the engine the 2001-2005 Civics have holds little resemblance to it's predecessors. Your engine is not much like the Del Sol's.
Second of all, have you pin-pointed where the noise seems to be coming from? Does it occur during idle, so you can check from the exterior of the car? Can you locate the noise from the cabin only?

I wouldn't worry about looking dumb for taking your car to a shop. I think you would look more dumb to the parts store counterperson if you keep going in buying parts to fix a problem that hasnt been diagnosed yet.
Oh yeah. You can hear it from the outside.
I did pop the hood and it seems as if it sort of originates from the belt in that vicinity ... the power steering belt, I presume. Because now that I think about it, it also happens when I make a steep turn requiring that I crank the wheel all the way.
Any more insight on that?

That's a good question also. We did take a nasty drive down a really crappy back road in Ennis, TX (it seems that they run out of pavement about 20 miles south of Dallas). These potholes (no crap) were like a foot deep in some places. I thought my suspension was going to take a dump, but I haven't had any problems in that respect. You may very well be right about that. It makes sense.
All good suggestions here ... I appreciate all of the questions because at least I know where to look. Or at least not get raped by a mechanic up here, who would want to gut my car just for the sake that it's a riceburner.
I'm an engineer. It's a habit to a) want to do it myself, and b) not use the instructions unless it's to see a diagram/parts list. Plus, it's the whole reason I bought a house with a finished barn and woodshed ... TO FIX MY OWN ****!!!

Now we're getting somewhere. Would it be possible for you to take some detailed photos of your engine bay, with focus on the region where the noise is most predominant?

Well, I'd like to but I think it would take forever and a day to load it here on dial-up.
If you're going to be on tomorrow, I'll get the pictures and upload when I actually have access to high speed internet (we're in the sticks ... we can't even get cable)
Thanks so far. I appreciate it.
