Default Vacuum Leak = burned oil

so i originally thought this problem was timing related... BUT its not.

SYMPTOMS:
Large amounts of oil being burned.
High / Surging Idle.
Exhaust gurgling.
Oil fouled plugs / plug chambers filled with oil.

Lets just say i was extremely scared that my rings were bad (especially since I just had this bitch rebuilt 3 years ago.)

I discovered a rather large vacuum leak coming from most likely a gasket.
now how does this effect oil consumption i wondered... well past experience showed me that when i replaced #16 in the picture below with one of those little breather filters i got the similar symptoms. (I saw several cars with this done and I assumed it was ok to do).

well now that about 40-60% of the air getting sucked into my engine is not passing this hose (#16) and therefore not creating a suction on it my car is drinking oil and the plugs chambers are getting filled with oil... theres not enough pressure being relieved in the head. i wish i had a picture because you can even see oil seeping from one of the valvecover studs.

You need to pull the timing belt cover off and inspect everything at a minimum.

i suspect the auto-tensioner may play a role in this..

but ill just update after i inspect the timing belt

ok, update.

turns out i have a rather large vacuum leak somewhere. WHICH I should have known from the symptoms. I once replaced a couple of vacuum hoses and got them reversed and my car started burping...

I bet my intake manifold has possibly come somewhat loose or taken some damage. It really sounds like 40-60% of the air going into my car IS NOT going thru the filter... I know, NOT GOOD! this should solve the high idle and weird exhaust sound. maybe itll help with the car vibration.

for making progress

for having a broken car
