Scary Noise from block!!
Guys I just swapped in a JDM H22A.
Its been running great for 5000 miles and then today all of a sudden i start it up and i hear this whiney noise coming from under the hood. When i pop the hood (car still running) I hear this scratch noise. like metal to metal contact. I looked around nothing is lose. I check the exhaust nothing. It seems to be coming from inside the block... I checked the oil everything seems fine.
I am known for driving like an old lady, granny shifting and what not. I don't push my car. Why did this happen to me? more importantly What happened to me??
Please more insight, before i seek professional help.

Pull the valve cover and check the cam lobes and rocker arms and drain the oil and check for metal shavings...it could be a lot of things but those are some things to check.
When the drive the noise seem to go away. but when im parked and I pop the hood the noise is so scary i just shut it off fearing I might break something if i leave it on too long. I will check the belts/crank pulley and drain the oil to check for shavings. thanks Will be back with an update.
I checked the crank pulley. I went again and tightened it with the impact gun. its tight. Still got the sound tho. I will drain the oil tomorrow. I run synthetic so thats pricey.
any other input until tomorrow?
thanks alot fellas

Chances are that it is indeed the tensioner. I am going to check that out tomorrow, hopefully its that so i can replace it and get back on the road!!!
any one have tips to replacing the tensioner?

i had a similars sound
turned out to be the timing or balacer belt rubbing on the side cover
then i found out my 94k+ miles timing belt on it was loose
so i just tightned it
if the belt breaks and destroys the motor...i have a good reason to get an h22
heh

you have to isolate the sound. use a long hallow tube to your ear to figure out exactly where its comming from. Just aim the tube slowly all over your engine compartment untill the sound is the strongest.
I had a screaming noise and metal scratching comming from my intake manifold gasket. Air was escaping between gasket and block which made the gasket piece flutter making a wierd scratching noise.

Well being an H22a in an EK hatch it was a PITA to get to the belt cover.
I took the valve cover off and barely got the belt cover off.
When I got it off I put the Valve cover back on and fired it up.
No metal shaving or anything to do the with the belt. it was fine.
So i shut it off and then I removed the belt running the a/c and alternator (the running on the same belt because of a custom a/c bracket.
And the noise went away. So now it down to the A/C Compressor and Alternator.
Which of the 2 would make metal to metal contact noises internally?
Thanks!

alternator .... I've had a few that sound like marbles when they go out. And some metal on metal noise. Try a shorter belt to go from just a/c compressor to crank, if it will line up. Then if it quits, alternator... or see if it's charging.. etc.
took the alternator off and brought it to Advance Auto Parts for them to test.
It passed all the test and made no noise.
Comes down to the A/C Compressor now. Maybe that is why I havent been able to add freon. who knows. Gotta look for a a/c compressor now.
