Default Those using the Liberty Gearset....

I am having a tough time deciding on what 1st gear to use.

I am currently on the full GSR gearset and I love the ratios. I feel that they are perfect for what I am shooting for.

Liberty offers the 1st gear in 3.08 and 3.18.

I am racing SFWD and will be making in the 850+whp range....

So what 1st is recommended. I thought the 3.18 would be the best for power into second gear, but I could be wrong. Here are some of the specs of what I will be doing....
Rev limiter 10.5k
4.40FD
GSR 2nd - 3rd
1:1 4th
Cuff on 5th
Shooting for 160-165 traps

Any help is appreciated. I'm not a tranny guru by any means so that's why I am asking this here.

My only suggestion - Be honest with yourself about the power you will make and select your gearing based on that. I know a lot of people think they are making above 850, but very few are. Don't take this as gospel, but as just a guiding light......if you aren't going 160+, you ain't making 850

You forgot to mention what tire you plan on running ..

Not a huge difference.. but it should be factored in ..

24.5x or 25x?

I am being honest. There is no reason for me to lie about something like this. Why would I do that? That doesn't help me out at all. If you knew me a bit better then you would know who you're dealing with. I'm not nutswinger/bandwagoneer. I'll let what you said slide.... this time.

These are the numbers that I am looking at and I need some help on the tranny. You can either help or not help at all. Either way I need a trans setup that's not going to die at those power levels.

The ratios are so close that the difference probably won't even be noticeable.

That was what I was thinking too. The 3.18 should be a bit faster and last a bit longer, but not by much. Maybe 2-5mph more in it which would be decent and help 2nd hook even better.

Another Idea, is make the 850 whp, rev to 10.5, use your current GSR tranny, Datalog the run, and see what ratios would be adequate for your goals. Just a thought.

Please don't take my comment as calling you a liar or bashing in any way. It was just some advice, and something to really think about when you are getting ready to shell out the $$ for a good trans. Knowing who you are and what you are capable of does nothing for me. I am nobody and I don't know jack...but I just thought I would throw that out there after seeing everyone that says they are going to make all this badass power come up 150 short.

I thought this forum was for giving advice. I guess people really don't want advice. Back to the garage for me

Best of luck and sorry for the miscommunication.

I know where you were coming from Luke. I didn't take it too personal, but understand that I mean what I say.

Anyways, Gary I did think about that, but I also don't want to bust my backup tranny for testing. The liberty is to be my main trans and my stock GSR (1st through 5th) w/ Quaiffe as a backup.

Honestly, I think it should be the other way around. Why put wear and tear on a 4-5k tranny trying to dial in the car ? and seat time. A GSR tranny or B16 costs about $500.00 these days. A Liberty Gear set is probably the strongest in the market right now, but even the "best" breaks too.

The way that I see it though Gary is that's time wasted. I'm on a tight schedule as it is now. Ryan's right too. It's easy to set up the NLR, but I want to dial it in time based to the trans that I will run race weekend.

I did ask him, but he doesn't remember what is in it.

Did he actually say that? lol
It's not my fault that I can pay for things without the use of a credit card.

PS. Thanks to CNCPORT for sending me an awesome spreadsheet that will help me in my decision.

shooting for 850 now huh? let me know when your ready to send a cylinder head to jim stewart

850+whp (with mph to back it up) for 2 full seasons and still running strong. not too many can say that

i'll have to double check all my ratios...i sent the order in for my trans so long ago i dont remember exactly what they were.

ive had all sorts of combinations of gear ratio's in my car with all of the peicing together of old junk and what not, your not even going to notice a difference between the 2 first gears you mentioned.

on numerious occasions my car has gone just as fast with a straight LS trans in it as it has with a GSR trans. it went its fastest ET and MPH with a LS gear set with GSR final drive....

Actually Joe Stewart was an option that I looked into. The head is going to Brad though. I've done some research on what I want and have picked the minds of a few other shops that do head work and I like what Brad has to offer. He is doing his full SFWD headwork on this other head of mine.

Thanks for the info Buck.

Has anyone know how the trans shifts? What is everyone using for shifters? G-Force shifter? How's stock shifter and linkage with the Liberty gearset?
