First off, knocking on a starter doesn't do ****. It may help you start it a few times, but is only temp.
Easiest way to check starter----> jump 12v straight to the starter while it's grounded.

The starter should already be ground to the engine by the bolts that hold it in. Take a jumper wire, put one end on the battery (if it's charged to 12.5 or higher), and tap the other one onto the positive post of the starter. There should be some sparks when you get the two close.
If nothing happens to the starter, then it is bad (assuming that you have done this right)

a couple of things first off if you bump the starter and it turns over it is definately an internal starter issue ,, i have done it dozen and dozen of times very quick and precise diagnose
also what kind of CRACKPOT advice is that ?? (jump 12 v straight to the starter while it is grounded ??
starter already has 12 volts going to it ,, direct battery power ,,( there should be some sparks?? ) no **** jose if you apply battery power to starter housing sparks will fly ..
first off you need to make sure that you are getting power at the solenoid wire while someone tries to start the car, if you do,, and you got power at the main cable at starter you got an internal starter issue .. if no power at solenoid wire you could have bad ign switch, bad wiring or in this case yep an alarm or kill switch
DO NOT I repeat DO NOT .. listen to those CRACKPOT advices from awd terror
