Smoking from where? The engine bay, or out the tailpipe?

If its a brand new engine it may smoke for a bit as it burns out the grease/oils used in assembling it. When i had to retap my sparkplug hole, it smoked (Out the tailpipe) for about 2 days as it burned out the grease id sent down the sparkplug hole to pick up the shavings.

Thats just a guess though, ive never built an engine myself.

Another thought may be the headgasket is installed improperly.

Um...... what?

We're giving advice and you're just shooting it down? If it's burining/leaking oil, a leakdown test would have isolated the issue. I suspect this was never done.
