Default replacing piston rings and the might as well syndrome...

after getting some bad compression results for one of my cylinders along with some oil burning and smoke i decided to replace the piston rings myself.

now the question remains in the old familiar phrase "if im going to replace the rings and the motor will be apart anyways then i might as well ________________..."

the motor is a stock gsr b18c1 the head was just recently rebuilt, so i was planning on doing the bottom end.

i going to purchase a complete overhaul kit, for all the bearings and seals.
also take the block to a machine shop to be honed to standard stock specs.

Now i know that the old rings need to go and probably just replace with some oem set. But sense im down there anyways what else should i replace and upgrade.

Just looking for some advice on some parts that could make some number differences that wont hurt the wallet so much.

im really on a low budget and just want the car to be running perfect. so along with replacing all the bearings, seals, rings, and getting the cylinder walls honed what else should i try to do.

also some parts recomendations for the rings and rebuild kit would be great.

well as long as you have it all apart I would replace the timing belt, water pump, oil pump, belt tensioner. Oh and use ARP hardware when possible.

timing belt was replaced recently but water and oil pump is a good idea and the tensioner do you mean for the serpentine of for the timing belt?

another question i think the most worthwhile upgrade to do to my block and keep it VERY VERY reliable for a daily, would be some jdm itr pistons right. cause i can run them and everything else just stock gsr parts right?

also when i get my blocked honed out if it needs to be bored do i just go .10 over to 81.25 or go .20 over to 81.50?

im going 0.020" over cause my bore was out of round 0.013". But i would go 0.01" if you have to, so that if you need to in the future, you can always bore a little more to get your block cleaned up. I would go jdm itr pistons if you plan on getting some state 1 or stage 2 cams. If not, i would do jdm p72 or usdm 73 and the crank balanced.

Just have the pistons balance-matched to the rods and then balanced to the crank/flywheel/crank pulley if it worries you that much.

if you swap pistons, id say you should balance the whole rotating assembly.

the gsr is balanced pretty damn good from the factory. same goes for the itr pistons. just get a new oil pump and make sure every thing else is up to snuff like water pump, timing belt. have a machine shop blueprint all your vital specs like bearing clearances.piston to wall, ring gap etc. dont take any shorcuts

so why rebuilding my bottom end

i can throw in some jdm itr pistons and rings instead of the oem gsr and thats it. dont have to do anything else.

are they worth it?

most likely due to the open deck and normal wear ur gonna need to have the block bored and need to go with a lrger piston so i would make sure u wait to order any parts till u know for sure what size parts to order. and shlt if ur gonna get the the whole rotating assembly balanced then jus get the crank knife edged
