Default '94 civic rattle

i'm posting a new thread because it seems like they get backlogged very quickly and people stop seeing them.

annoying rattle coming from a '94 civic dx sedan. near the muffler, but sounds like something metallic vibrating/rattling inside the body panel maybe.

before i jump in the trunk and have my girlfriend drive to try to find the source of the noise i thought i'd ask you guys what you think.

i put a new m uffler on it a few weeks ago, did a nice job. no leaks, nothing loose, muffler is not touching anything that it could rattle against.

is this a common thing for civics?

thanks.

Check your hangers. I had a rubber hangewr break at the resonator on my catback and it would make a horrible rattle at idle/ stop lights / anytime the a/c kicked on or off, etc. A $3 carquest OEM rubber hanger fixed it

thanks man.
do you mean the hangers at the end of the muffler?t he sound is definitely coming from the rear right of the car somewhere.
are there more rubber hangers down the piping?
good idea.
if it's not that, could it be some sort of rod rattling around in the trunk, or in the back right quarter panel?

thanks again.

Mine was the rubber hanger about midway back on the car, right by the resonator, I was causing it to rattle near the back, Took 2 weeks to find someone with the right floor jack and some 2x4s to drive up on to get the jack under it. And finally got it replaced, problem solved!

Try also checking in between the cat and the heatshield on the top side, many times a small pebble will get in there and rattle around without coming out. Let us know what you find bro.

Mine rattled against the bumper. I just pushed down on it away from the bumper several times. Eventually I pulled it down enough and the noise never came back.

Good luck

Perhaps a heat shield underneath the car that's hitting the exhaust?

I'd put cash on it being the hangers/heatshield too.

Best o luck.

where's the heatshield?
honestly, it sounds like it's coming either from the muffler somewhere, or up in the body panel somewhere.

when you say it's the hangers, meaning one is missing somewhere?

if i can get this to go away i'll be a very happy man.

so what about the heat shield? just bang it out of the way? what about cranking the exhaust down with a coat hanger?

Heat shields are on the bottom of your car between the car itself and the exhaust...you can either bang them out of the way or remove them completely (I wouldn't think removing them would hurt anything).

Yeah I removed my heatshield. It's no big deal just dont go driving in tall grass unless you want to have a fire party.

I bet your shizz is vibrating on you bumper, or chassis.
Like I said try lightly stretching it away or down from all contact areas.

Like I said check hangers. I never noticed how bad my whole sytem moved with just one broken ruuber hanger, I had it on a lift the other day and the whole exhuast system was moving because of that center hanger broken, the rattle was from the passenger rear side, but the hanger in the middle was the problem
