Default advice on painting lugs

I'm planning on painting my lugs red soon and I'm wondering what steps need to be gone through... such as what to clean them off with and what kind of paint to use etc. Also do I use a primer or clearcoat afterwards? Help a painting noob out! Thanks for any advice.

Dont bother, cus when you go to reapply youre just going to end up tearing the paint off. If you want red lugs, go buy some annodized red lugs.

If you really want to do it, go buy some spray primer, spray wheel paint, and spray wheel clear. Lay them on a rag, thread side down, spray the primer, let it dry, spray the paint, maybe 2 or 3 coats, then spray the clear. Then watch your hard work go down the drain when you put them back on the car with your steel tire iron...

Yes i realize that will happen.. the reason I won't buy anno'd lugs is because of the whole fading to pink thing. MR is close enough to pink as it is... lol.

Thanks for your recommendation, i guess we'll see how it turns out if i do it

If you need to ask, they'll never look like that. well maybe your the exception, if you are, then heres what you need to do in a nutshell.

Wash with degreaser. Sand every nook and cranny with either a scuff pad or 1000 grit. Wipe down with a solvent or water based cleaner, than prime. After the primer has cured(overnight) sand again using 800 or 1000 grit. Wipe down with cleaner, than spray your color. I'm assume your looking to paint with a spray can. If so spray medium coats, one coat at a time letting the paint flash for about 5 minutes in between coats. Stop spraying your paint when you've aquired the texture and shine your looking for.

The paint flaking off is the real problem... does anyone know if I would have better luck with a spray enamel?

I know powdercoat would get probably the best results over anything but I don't have the resources to do it.. and I don't feel like getting everything together just to powdercoat some lugnuts If I had more/larger pieces I was working on I would definitely do it
