Why do aftermarket mufflers have such large tips? Is it just for looks or does it affect sound and/or flow rate?

 

A coffee can should have the same effect

As long as the tip diameter is not smaller than the rest of the piping, it does nothing for the car except for looks.

 

They really don't serve any purpose....i have a 2.5" magnaflow muffler as part of my exhaust...and never really got around to putting a tip on it.......really doesn't do anything except for maybe guarding the back of your bumper from all that black carbon

 

For the bling bling.

 

My one friend got a muffler tip and it gave him 30 hp. He was able to beat corvettes! Every time he floored it, vtak came out his exhaust. It was mad crazy yo!! Vtak!! AhhHh!!! LMAO!!

 

muffler tips serves no purpose outside of cosmetics. which is why the n1 looks so sexyyy

 

Some tips can help muffle the exhaust noise further. Others can amplify sound in certain frequency ranges. Take a large coffee can, punch a hole in the bottom, and put over your stock muffler and you'll change the tone.

However, they're really just cosmetic for the most part.

 

Their are resonated exhaust tips but they probably don't quiet it too much, maybe a little change in tone.
