im lookin for a new tranny for my da. just lookin for opinions. gsr or b16? and how will i kno if its a good tranny im buying. is there anyway to tell if its gonna have grinds or anything?
It's up to you to decide, would you rather have a little more performance or a little better gas milage? The B16 tranny will accelerate quicker but get worse gas milage since the RPMs will be up higher, especially on the freeway. As far as grinds and things like that, there's no way to tell unless you testdrive the tranny or rip it apart and check all the synchros/bearings/clearances.
not to mention trying to find a cable gsr tranny...
I recommend you rebuild your tranny and put a different final drive in it if you want to go faster, not to mention the peice of mind knowing you have a new tranny...dont make the same mistake i did, taking someones word that it was rebuilt less than 5000 miles ago, if you do, get the paper work to confirm it, still you dont know how hard it has been beatin on in those miles...
anyone that is selling gsr or b16 tranny knows that they are prime time trannys, so they know the value is good whether its been beat up or not, and if they can jip you for another 300 dollars telling you its been rebuilt....
Dont go cheap, or you will regret it, you will find this out over time....if you do, in the end you be putting out more denero.

True, it's hard to trust anyone nowadays when it comes to Hondas and cars in general and used parts... ripping someone off on a tranny is super easy, if it's out of the car and not taken apart there's no way you can tell anything about it at all. It does get expensive to rebuild it though. What I think might be a good way to go is reuse your stock tranny, get a blown Si or GSR tranny that still has good gears, and buy new synchros, then put the synchros and gears into your stock tranny.

If you know nothing about cars (at all, in general), please don't post. There IS a reason why B16 and GSR trannies are way more popular over LS ones... because the gearing is shorter which means faster acceleration. Did you guys think that through at all?

Depends what you want the tranny for, if it's for drag racing go with the B16 tranny and maybe swap in a LS 5th gear to help you out if it's your daliy driver for gas mileage.

im getting my stock gsr tranny rebuilt for 900, taken out, rebuilt and installed, im also having him put in a exedy stage 2 clutch and exedy 9.0lb flywheel that i purchased off ebay.
I went a little overboard with clutch and flywheel, but just for a basic rebuild it was 900, b16 trannys in good shape go for 750 all day long, gsr trannys are going for just a bit more, but your risking buying a bunk tranny

I'd say B16 trannies are probably actually more expensive than GSR trannies because the gearing is even shorter (it's like an ITR tranny but without the LSD), and I usually see them both go anywhere from 550-700 completely stock. Basically to sum up the answer to the OP's question, we gave you some options but it's your choice to decice what you want and how much money you have, etc. Also like someone mentioned (about the LS 5th gear), my choice (if I had the money) would be to get an Si tranny, an aftermarket LSD, an LS 5th gear for freeway cruising, and a ~10lb flywheel with Exedy stage 2 clutch. But basically it's all up to personal preferance.

thanx for everything else tho i had talked to a guy i met on g2ic.com and we raced with pretty much the same setup but he has a b16 tranny and he beat me by a good amount. my clutch slips a little to so ive got it in my head now to replace the clutch and tranny. sounds like a b16 is what i want
rebuilding is a little out of budget. ive also heard you lose initial torque with a lightened flywheel cuz it doesnt have as much rotating mass or something. anyone kno anything about that?
thanx again for all the response

When you start off the line you do have to hit the gas harder with a lighter flywheel since it'll want to slow down a lot easier than a heavy flywheel when the clutch starts rubbing against it, but it'll make rev matching a lot easier which alone I think is enough reason to get one, plus it's supposed to help the engine rev up faster a little.
