I have a 94 accord ex. I change my ATF every time I change my oil. It doesn't cost me anything extra because I do it myself. But, even if it did, doing so is much cheaper than a new transmission.

Have you seen some of the fluid in cars that isnt changed until 90k? It looks like black death and smells like rotten pooter.

So how often are you suppose to change/flush it in a manual trans?

I always have mine in the glove compartment for easy access. I believe the interval for transmission fluid change (MT) is 30,000 miles, and a flush at 90,000 miles.

PS. We're here to answer questions, but not ones that can be found by looking through a car manual. Those can be found by not being lazy.

They are, but they're not here to sit and wait for other members to ask basic questions to which the answers can be found in about 2 minutes.

Perhaps a call to the dealership might unravel this huge mystery?

Mine is usually in the glove compartment too but I had in my house out last month trying to figure where to get the code for the radio and I have been able to find it. So in your opinion do you have too change this every 30000 miles or is this just recommended.

As you'll see in one mean member's signature, I'm obsessive compulsive. So, yeah, I would recommend it. It takes maybe 30 minutes of your life, and maybe $25 of your money.

the dealership tried to charge 70 bucks for a change and 170 for a flush. i laughed and walked out.

he even had the nerve to say "just dont come between 12-1 because all the techs are on lunch and we dont work during those times."

So how hard is this to do without a hoist? I checked for a DIY but I couldn't find one.

Easy. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being hardest), I'd say it'd peak at 3.

You'll want a hose with a funnel attached to it for filling (always fill with car on level ground), and some sort of catching device for fluid drain.

Honda actually recommends that you DO NOT flush the automatic transmissions.
I'm suprised that they even offered to do it.

who told you that? You are suppose to have a tranny flush at 90k... with automatic transmissions you should change your tranny fluid more often than manual trannies.

those prices are pretty outrageous, i just bought 3 quarts from a local dealership for 7$ a quart and had my mechanic do it for me

Bud, you're thinking of two different transmissions. I quoted the maintenance schedule for a manual transmission.

For those interested, sign up on Honda OwnerLink: https://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/...2Easp

They'll give you more detailed information about your specific car, and it's maintenance schedules.

Just spotted this: http://justmycar.googlepages.c...l.htm

The transmission fluid change is identical to that car.

Hey new guy here just browsing around, I went to a dealership and my friend worked in service, He said manual trannys dont need to be changed or flushed unless a swap is made, I had trouble believing it but I been on 106,000 miles on my 02 civic coupe, and never had a problem,

i changed my manual trans fluid at 30K simply because it was more than 4 years old but the stuff that came out looked almost as good as the stuff that went in. This is on a daily driven, heavily boosted, m/t. I probably wont change it again for 60 or even 90k. As for ATF's.. there is a such thing as too frequent. Phootbag...every oil change? are you serious? I dont know how I feel about that. 60K is the earliest Id suggest it, and Id still only do it based on its appearance.

pg 202 of my manual suggests 60k or 3 years be the first change for m/t, a/t or cvt. under severe conditions. m/t's do it again at 120 and a/t's again at 90.

dont forget that most manufacturers now have no change interval for their transmissions. The lubricants used have become better, the seals have become better and thus the life span of these components have been improved.
