Failed Smog - high NOx
I finally got my Civic VX running so I take it to smog today.
I failed NOx at about 1800 (measured). I should be at 700PPM or lower.
Everything else was clean - HC was at 8 to 9 PPM and CO was at 0.8.
I'm going to clean the EGR valve. That's the easy part. I read about the EGR metering ports. There should be a plug over the four runners, but mine is welded shut. Is there any other way of cleaning these ports without drilling? Any of you drill out the welds and put a plug in?

I would check out the EGR valve first.
Check to see if you get 6-9 in.hg. vacuum from the vacuum line that is connected to it.
Then start the car and apply 6-9 in.hg to the EGR valve itself and see if the motor either dies or the rpm's drop.
Try these first before you start drilling. Get back to us with the results from these two tests and we will have some answers

Hey guy,
Oh, I already did that after the smog today.
* EGR doesn't seem to work. Put up to 20in HG and the motor would not stumble.
* took out the valve and put vacuum up to 20in HG and the plunger wouldn't move, but it held vacuum which is a good sign.
* I move the plunger up and down to make sure it's not seized. It's not seized.
It looks like I have a bad EGR valve. On my 82 celica I have a simple EGR valve with no electrical sensor. Put vacuum and the plunger moves up. That doesn't happen with the EGR valve for my Civic. I assume the wires have nothing to do with the action of the plunger.
