1996 accord, no spark....now what?

1996 accord, no spark....now what?
I have a 96 Accord LX, Auto. I drove it to work and it was perfect. I came out at the end of my shift and it wouldn't start. I checked to see if I was getting spark but it appears as though I am NOT.
I pulled the spark plug and conected it to the spark plug wire, cranked the motor and we saw NO spark. Is this the correct method? We also stuck a spark plug in the ignition coil wire and cranked the motor and saw no spark. I can smell fuel coming out of the exhaust and the motor turns over strong, what else could it be?
Can I test the ignition coil, or ignitor?
