is 0W20 too thin an oil to use?
Im not an oil expert, but 0W is pretty thin and 20 viscosity is pretty low for the temperatures our cars reach. this seems like more of an oil best suited for mainly winter climates. the factory recommends 5W-30 (winter) and 10W-30(summer) for moderate climates.

Not exactly. The factory recommends 5W30 as the preferred viscosity in all climates, at all temperatures, at all times of year. They also say that you can also optionally use 10W30 if the temperature never gets much below freezing in your area, but 5W30 is still preferred.

Not even, it's probably thin enough to freeze in some areas.

if the 20 rating is too low, is there a warm rating that is too high? for example will a 0w50 oil be good at all temperatures?

Its actually 0w-30 German castrol that a lot of us use. I hardily burn any in the race car over the course of a weekend, however my dd sees Mobil 1 5w-30 with minimal burn but the race car drinks it. Go figure
