my shift knob sucks, did i do it wrong?

my shift **** sucks, did i do it wrong?
i bought a replacement shift ****. its the kind that has the 3 holes with screws. well i put in the little adapter for my shifter, and i tighten the screws all up and it for like 3 mins, then becamse very loose and was rocking pretty bad. did i not tighten the screws enough?

your suposeto find the one that almost fits on the shifter then put it in the **** tighten the screws then put the **** on the shifter and push and turn and it should thread on...ive had one like that for about 2 months it hasent come loose

yeah like what i did was put the adapter in the shift ****, placed the **** over the shifter and tightened the screws, i take it this is wrong
