one hell of a day!
alrighty well i'll start with some background. my car is a 94 ej1 with a jdm d15b swap in it. and this will be long... i'll leave a cliff at the bottom if you wish to skip all this.
it all started today while i was working. i was on my way to a customers house to meet up with my boss who had the work van. pulling into the neighborhood my car starts steaming like no other.
So immediately i shut the car off. Come to find out i busted a coolant hose that comes off the intake manifold. Went to Autozone and got new hose and put it on. Drove about a half mile down the road and steam again!!! This time i found that my radiator fan was not kicking on. so i pull the plug and put + and - wires to my battery, fan comes on. so it's not the fan. long story short it was the thermostat. I change the thermostat. all cooling problems solved.
cliff: here is my problem
BUT now my car idles all crazy. anytime it's idling it goes from 800 to 1200 and drops down to 800 really fast like fuel is being cut off. but it does it quickly. and everything just seems to be alot hotter than normal. my oil temp gauge is reading 200 whereas it used to only read ~160. and my valve cover gets HOT as hell!!! enough to burn the **** out of my hand. and it never used to get that hot. ideas anybody?? my thought is clean iacv to fix idle problem
thanks in advance guys

the idle problem is typical of a vaccum leak. but the fact that it started when your car overheated... makes me think that may not be normal.
did you make sure you had all the air pockets out when you replaced the thermo and hose? if coolant isn't getting to the iacv then it may mess up your idle. try that first.

bleed your damn coolant man, all the air bubbles are making it go to 200, and making your idle shitty.
Theres a bleed screw like infront of the valve cover when it attaches to radiator hose., ( well on my d15b)

get a radiator funnel, they're cheap.
with a cool motor, take the cap off the radiator and put the funnel on. fill the funnel and run the car till it's and opperating temp. rev it here and there to work bubbles loose. squese the upper rad hose to get air out of it. eventually no bubbles will come out of the funnel.
if the level drops in the funnel have mixed coolant ready to refill.
this should get air pockets out of most civics.
