Default Is this a bad idea?

Okay, here is my situation, and yes, it is a very real one. Not a 'what if' thing like most of these 'I have a friend in Japan...' threads.

My friend from back in HS has been in Japan nearly 2 years, he will be coming back within a year I believe. He is willing to bring me a Type-R. My problem is I can't pay for TWO new cars. So I want to know if its plausable to just get rid of my car by means of letting someone take over the payments. I owe ~18,xxx which by then will be ~17,xxx or less. I will have between 34,000 to 42,000 miles on this car by then. I know that is a lot. I guess I'm just trying to see if anyone thinks this is possible or will I just have to eat the difference.

edit: oh yeah and I won't be driving the Type-R, I will be driving my CRX, the R will be a show car :D (at least until no one likes them anymore)

Ok

First off you really need to research what is entailed with importing a car.
the taxes and other fee's along with the Possibility of it not even being allowed to be registered makes it NOT worth it.

as for you selling your car etc
with an Si with 40k on it your not getting 18k when they are 20k new.

Well he's over there for military duty so it shouldn't be too bad getting it here. As for registering it I haven't got that far yet, this is a early early thing that I'm just considering.

even if you got 18k for it, which is unlikely but even if you did you would probably pay that much getting it over here and street legal and registered

I was in the service and been overseas , and to try to get a car shipped over = A big PITA people just buy cars over there and leave them there. They buy cheap and end up selling cheap. But if you happen to strike it rich some how Lottery etc. do it. Other than that just keep your car IMO.

Yes, it's a bad idea. The expense is huge. Import Taxes, Transportation Taxes and costs, plus the cost of getting it to pass emissions. Even if you can get it to meet emission requirements, it will never run the way it was designed too.

To be honest, I think you would do better to have your friend bring you some performance parts for your current ride.

Just my opinion

if its only gonna be a show car you can trailer it and keep it in a garage or atleast off the streets you wont have to register it. You will have to trailer it also. I would only do it if i were gonna drive it though and thats too much money for a car that isnt that much better than the SI especialy for the price

I think they have lower emission standard over there, back in the days my buddy had an rx-7 with 20k worth of mod over there in Japan. Then he had to come back to the States for next duty station, and sold his car. He said it cost way too much to get it emission fitted.

That's exactly correct from the others posters. Being in the military doesn't mean squat.

You can't take a car from here to there, and you can't take a car from there to here.

Well you can from there to here but you have to buy like almost all new parts, taxes, etc; etc; ...it's a true PITA.

I know a lot of my friends that said they owned a Skyline for like $600 while they were there. People just keep selling them when they leave for super cheap.
