H22 Lifespan??
how do u measure the "average" lifespan w/ so many variables... like a hard driven motor compared to babied... and ontime maintenance to late maintenance.. oil quality etc. etc. h22's CAN last up to 200k before a rebuild is needed, and some blow up at 50k...
yeah thats understandable i was just trying to make sure that the car i am looking at was not gonna blow up in the next 500 miles. it has been driven about like i will easy most of the time but vtec fun every once and a while.
Ya it really depends on how you treat the engine. My dad had an 88 Olds, the 3800 engine lasted till 250,000 miles. However, remember that this is a high performance engine. I have this engine and I've hear a lot of good about it. It is a reliable motor. If you want it to last stay up to date on maintenance and don't race it unless ur into that, it will put stress on the engine though.
I love when people say don't race.. I believe the manufactors designed the engine for all types of conditions. you really think honda would come out with a engine that you shouldn't rev high often? I beat the **** out of my 4th gen and it was still running strong when I sold it with 240,000. its all about maintenance.
let's just say this, when you buy the car (if you do), just make sure all maintenance was done and on time. If the car has like 90k with the normal maintenance done, believe that car will last you a while. Preludes will last you over 200k with regular maintenance, just make sure to check oil esp in our car since they love to burn it when in vtec.
Well like everyone said is all about how the car is maintained, but my car has 153,xxx and I autocross it all the time. So i would say that they are pretty good on the reliability front.

I have had great expriences with Honda engines. Even when not taken care of that well, they still last a while. The H22 is no exception. It can last a long time. It's designed to be driven hard.

I am in the same boat. Just make sure it has been taken care of and you'll be fine.

An old club member was almost at 300k miles on the original motor and it was only using a 2qts/3000mi. Everything else around the motor was falling apart though.
My buddies got one w/ 170k+, the previous owner was all highway miles but when he first got that car we took turns reving the **** out of it and the thing still runs strong, he plans to turbo it now so I'm crossing my fingers. It's a honda what could go wrong with it?
I'll leave this short and simple. Your friend must not no much about Honda's
I've beat on all my Honda's (see sig) they have all had over 100k. I've seen Honda's go through Dealer auctions with 500k+ still running!
Keep up with the oil changes changing the timing belt every ~70k, other then the normal wear and tear the h22a should last well over 200k. Now you may be burning some oil after awhile, but thats to be expected with almost any motor.

yup i totally agree, my bro useto drive my lude n put about 50k n came out with broken pistons after about 120k miles but that was becouse of bad maintnance, i remmember that he only did one oil change on it.... lol n then revin it up to 8500 rpm everyday racin people. thats when yur just asking for it.

winding out any motor does stress internals just cuz there are stronger forces on everything like rod bearings and valve springs etc...also launching hard forces the crank away from the trans which wears the thrust washers. thats true on every engine...
most engines will last longer than 130k if its well maintained and not beaten on every shift...honda engines have very tight clearances...200k before a rebuild is what you should expect
just dont forget to change that timing belt

well i had my fuel/main relay go out on me around 110xxx miles and drive pulley brake but thats about it. and the owner before me( my uncle) never changed the oil or sparkplugs ever since he owned it which was about 85k. there were about 5 different oils in the car and it surprisengly passed emissions in illinois. ofcourse when i got the car, it was my practice car for autos and i changed all wires plugs and oil and it ran perfect i still dont know if timing belt needs to be changed or not
