just bend it, its probaly hitting your exhaust piping same happened to me just bend it from hitting the piping and if you do take it off the center of your floor inside the car will be a little warmer than having the heat shield thats why its there to keep heat out of cab so bend it and wont rattle anymore
i always remove my heat shields...to me they are very unnecessary...ive done it around gas tanks and everything...as long at there is space around the pipe it will be fine...
i found out the rattling isnt caused by my heatshield hitting my exhaust pipe. theres a tiny pebble caught in between the heatshield and exhaust pipe, and its nearly impossible to remove the two with the tools i have
If the noise is still there after bending it, just remove it. No matter how much I bent the headshield on my Talon, it would still rattle. It's embarrassing. LOL. I removed them, and even at 27psi I haven't melted anything yet

read up on thermodynamics. Also...the obvious reason is that heatshields keep heat away from places it shouldnt be. You want to try minimize the heat in your engine compartment. if you remove the heatshield above the cat right by the shift linkage, heat makes it's way into the passenger compartment pretty bad. Plus, some of the bolts that are above the heat shield (like the ones that hold your center console down) get much more rusted without a heat shield there.
Plus, cast iron exhaust manifolds look UGLY.
The real question is....why take off the heat shields? A lot of work for really nothing good....

lol that's EXACTLY what happened to me. I was gonna suggest that. Well....what i did was just crush the heatshield and all the pebbles in with a hammer (gently, so you dont ding up the exhaust). This way, no new pebbles get in. I'm sure i could have removed the heat shield to get all the rocks out.....but im lazy, and my hammer was MUCH more satisfying.

I have a similar thing happening in mine, except it only happens between 2500 and 3500 RPM. I've checked under the car and seem to have pinpointed it to the exhaust heat shield when parked (happens at 5k in park)
So it seems to be the concensus that taking it off is fine?

if you take off the heatshield i highly recomend wrapping up the whole exhaust system with heat wrap not just the header, the WHOLE exhaust!!! it makes a world of difference!! and it improves gas mileage!!! i helped out one of my friends with a gti and WOW!!! huge difference! eng. bay and motor temp went down a little! but the most difference we got was the heartier the engine felt! don't cheap out on just the header go all out and do it all the way to the beginning of the exhaust tip!
