Default DIY: Custom CD console

At request I'm going to briefly describe my process I used to create my CD console on my '03 EX on a very minimal budget...

1. Remove console by simply giving it a good tug

2. Since I used all available space, remove your cd player and cubby hole as well as all dials and vents etc. (it gets messy and scratched up)

3. Fabricate face plate (referring to the new plate that will be contoured to the dash)- Probably one of the most difficult things due to the contour of the dash, I used a chunk of metal that was the same thickness as the rim that is left after you remove your cd player and cubby hole (make sure whatever material you use is either the same thickness or thinner as to not have a ridge above your original console) Cut face plate out to fit tightly into opening so it sits on the little border and cut out the hole for your cd player where and however you want the cd player to sit in the dash and bend to contour of dash (difficult if material being used is metal)

4. Shim- Because of the angle of my cd player when inserted into dash it hits the frame running behind the dash board I had to shim the face plate up to the trim around the cd player face (I used wood strips probably about 3/4" thick and cut to account for the vertical tilt of the cd player)

5.Attach face plate- I used superglue to fasten the metal face plate to the ridge on the console

6.Form- Now that the cd player fits into the hole in the face plate without any gaps anywhere, I used bondo filler. Form the rest of the console from the shims on, you may have to use multiple layers if your using a filler, be sure to sand well between layers and clean before applying a new layer.

7. CLEAN and PERFECT- Make sure all of your forming is without holes, ridges or bumps because they will show up. Clean very well make sure to get all the dust and debris and the console is smooth as a baby's butt.

8.Fasten cd player- If your putting your cd player in a different location than the original you'll have to make a bracket or some way to hold the cd player to the console.

9. Cover- You can use anything you want, I used a carbon fiber sticker as you can tell. If your using a sticker start at one corner and slowly press it down using a rolled up paper towel or piece of rubbery plastic and HEAT (a hot hair dryer will do the trick)

10. Install- Put all your ***** and such back into the console and fasten your cd player in and your ready to roll.

That's it... any questions or comments feel free... oh and as posted in a prior thread... If you think it's rice that's fine, I don't care so save the flames for someone who cares. Thanks!

Props for originality, but that's something I definitely wouldn't do. That CF vinyl sticker looks beyond counterfeit.

Indeed you are correct, but I needed a cd player at the time and I got it SUPER cheap, so it works I'm not complaining for now

Thanks, but yeah it is a little bit, it was kinda one of those things I just threw together what I had at the time. I have some plans for some different materials and modifications on it... just not sure exactly what yet lol

It's about as far from being "my kind of thing" as it could possibly be, but good on ya for doing something different and doing it yourself.

And your Brembo sticker looks wonky...

I'm not sure what wonky means... but I'd probably agree with you.

Haha... ah yeah. I sometimes forget where i am and drop the odd very English word into some of my posts.

Wonky means not straight mate... or it's "on the ****", as most people here would say in slang terms.

lol gotcha... I'm not sure.. the whole contour where it's at is weird so it looks different from each angle. One of those optical illusions, ya know?

I could be wrong though, it's probably off. whatever

As long as you didn't mean my *****

My mom's fiance is Irish I could never understand a thing he said when I first met him (even through the accent) it's almost another language.

Yeah, **** is another one of those words lol, but we use it either in the context of "to have a ****" i.e cranking one off or you could say "that looks ****" to mean something looks crap. If i said i was pulling your winky, jokingly referring to your man meat, it would mean either stringing you along with a lie or having a laugh/taking the ****.

And yeah, the Irish accent can be difficult to understand depending on how strong it is and where the person is from. It's a bit like a really thick Scottish twang, that can be hard to get your head around too.
