Default How to read code for CEL?

I have a CEL on right now. I took it to two different places to see if they could read what the code is but they both said they can't do it with OBD1 cars.

Is this true? If not, how would I get the code?

btw search keeps coming up as error.

Jump the 2 pin connector (you can use a paperclip or wire), with the key out. Then put the key in, turn it to on but don't start it. Watch your CEL flash on the screen. A long flash = 10, a short flash = 1. Add it all up and that's your code.

i went down there today and i had a yellow connector that wasn't plugged into anything. it was a 2 pin so i tried it but i couldn't get any codes from it.

is it because my CEL would go away and only come every once in a while or could i have just used the wrong connector? is the connector supposed to blue just like the ones in the picture?

CEL should be stored until you reset your ECU by disconnecting your battery.... meaning you did it wrong.
