1992 2.2 JDM VTEC - AA Man says snapped timing belt but sounds like chain
Was doing 30mph without VTEC engaged and car stopped. When I turn it over it sounds like a bag of spanners rattling around. Is it a timing chain or belt? If it's a chain then it could be the sound of the chain thrashing around.
What are my chances of not damaging any valves etc? The car's quite old and may not be worth repairing.
Any help would be appreciated

If you did not break the belt whist in VTEC then you should not have bent valves. It's a free running (non interferance) engine when on the low cam lobes.
If you do repair the belt you should upgrade to the F22/H23 nonVETC manual timing tensioner. The autotensioners have a reputation of failing prematurely.
Sorry for your misfortune.

Thanks for that, it gives me hope as I've had conflicting replies in other forums.
Can you explain what the metalic sound would be when I try to start the car? I thought it may have been a chain but if it's a belt then what's making the noise?

could be alot of things. Run a leakdown test and determine what the health of the inside is.
I used to remember. I want to say that it's an interference engine but I can't remember. The stock H22 low cam lobes are less than .300" lift and the peak lift on an H23 is close to .375". That's a pretty big difference. And the h23 does not have very large valve reliefs in the pisotns either. I have some pretty large cams on my nonVTEC F22B now. I know that it's got a lot of interference after that. I had my timing belt slip once already. Replaced a lot of valves. It was of the not good.
If you have an H22 then you don't ahve to worry about it.

On stock cams? My buddy here had his auto tensioner fail 100 miles from home and his valves are fine. Good compression, everything. He's been driving it for a while now after replacing the belt and upgrading to the manual tensioner.

Yeah, we've established that.

YES, H23 is an interference engine, i saw 2 H23 bent valves when timing belt ripped

OK finally got to throw my car in and get it checked, luckily they were able to see the damage with the head off so only cost me £20.
THE H22A IS AN INTERFERENCE ENGINE
Mine was a 1992 jdm 2.2 si vtec
Hope this helps someone

Every cloud has a silver lining
Managed to pickup same spec car with a full veilside bodykit and smoothed boot for £500. It's a bit tatty and the kit hasn't been fixed properly but hey what a bargain and I can use my old one for spares.
