Default Been done? Full OBD1 engine harness swap?

Since search is down, I can't see if this has been done or not. I'm thinking instead of a conversion harness, I may just take a complete OBD1 Z6 engine harness and part of the body harness (strut tower plugs, ECU plugs still hooked together) and make it look like it was made factory like this. I don't think it would be too bad and I'd kill 2 birds with one stone: 1. Engine removal would be easy as the plugs on engine harness are right there 2. OBD0-OBD1 swap done and would look completely factory.

AM I nuts?

yes your nuts, this will be WAY to much work to do. just convert your existing car harness to accept the ZC motor. This subject has been tackled soooo many times and everytime a post like this comes up, people that have done this stuff come on and tell you ITS NOT WORTH THE TIME. it is soo much faster and easier to just us your existing car harness, just save yourself the headache. it all seems easy until you actually start installing the whole harness and realize WTF have I got myself into??

LOL. Not worth the time to me would be a ZC swap. I don't remember anywhere saying I had a ZC swap, did I??

I guess to clear this up a little bit, let me fill you in on some info about me and the car.

1. I went to school for electrical engineering. Wiring harnesses do not scare me. I have put things in cars/trucks that were never available in that model from other vehicles. People said "It's too hard, it can't be done". Whatever. If you understand schematics and wiring diagrams, it should be SIMPLE. I'm not talking about putting the whole body harness in. I will just use an engine harness and the part the goes from the strut tower to the ECU. Weed out all the other BS from the harness and you have: Constant power, switched ignition, ground, fuel pump wire, and gauges. What is that, 10 wires??? lol.

2. My car IS NOT a D series or ZC. It HAD a turbo B16 in it. It will probably have a Turbo B 16 in it for just a little while longer until my machine work is done on my Dart block. Then, I'll be shooting for a little more.

3. To me, a conversion harness is "hacked up" as you have WAY too many plugs. That increases a chance for an electrical failure or intermittent problem. I'm not doing this because "it's the easy way out" I"m doing this because I think "it's the way it should be done to be right" and it will simplify things down the road. Engine harness gets messed up because of something stupid like engine fire, broken axle or whatever? So what. Get another harness from a Civic or Integera and plug it in.

This question is not "do you think I can do it" it is "has it been done". I WILL do it and I will post what I did to make a ridiculously simple harness. Everyone looks at it from the wrong angle from what I can tell if they think this is hard.

Not a flame, just clarifying my end. I am not some punk kid that doesn't know how to wire something up.

EDIT: Man, I wish search was working. Any clue when it will be back up? I use this site about 98% with the search function and about 1.5% helping others and about .5% asking questions... LOL.

sounds like a great idea. i agree that useing the original harness is better. thumb ups to u for doing this and hopefully finding a fairly simple way to do it for everybody to benifit. keep us posted

As soon as I can dig up a body harness to cut up, I'll start posting up progress, pics, etc. I know using the stock harness is easier; that's what is in the car right now.

My bad for the human error of typing ZC instead of Z6, still the same f*ckin principal of changing harness's. 99% of people who post a question like this don't know what they are doing and have NEVER done any wiring so the fact that you even posted this puts you in that category. Being that you are sooo talented and schooled in electronics wtf did you even post this question that you apparently don't need help w/ anyway??

I never went to school and have done all this before using common sense and experience and I can tell you how much of the tech post on here are wrong when it comes to diagrams, it should be no new idea to you then to just get a factory manual for both cars involved and just wire up everything needed to make this work. That is what I have had to do w/ all my conversions. whether you like it or not it is still alot more work doing it your way because I have to done it this way and realize how pointless and a waist of time it was. plug-n-play=no brainer=no problems

You got a response based on your OP question and reply to my response so no flaming here either

p.s. I think they site has been getting some routine maintenance hence why search is not working correctly, I have noticed not all forums are active right now due to this.

LOL. THanks for the reply. I may re evaluate the effort to benefit ratio then... BTW, the car won't be getting a Z6, etiher. It's getting a Dart blocked B series with turbo...

Now that theres gonna be a hella fast car yes sir yes sir! yeah I'll try to post up some pics of my motor tonight since I've done my OBD 1 B16 swap to my '89 DX, you'll see that it's clean and all looks factory

I'm the same as you, I wanted to do the harness swap but after see how much really was involved I decided to work "smarter" instead of "harder" and it gave me more time in the end for other project areas on the car

I have a 89 EF with a B18C type R installed with the stock OBD2a harness on the engine with an OBD1 main harness grafted onto my stock EF main harness and OBD2a ECU connectors so it can be done it just takes time and good wiring diagrams
